EAST PEORIA, Ill. – University of Indianapolis sophomore Morgan Foley opened the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Championship Tournament with a pitching performance for the ages Friday.  The Louisville, Ky., native tossed a 13-inning, one-hit shutout while striking out an NCAA record-setting 30 batters in the Greyhounds' 1-0 first-round win versus Rockhurst.
 
Foley completely baffled the Rockhurst offense.  The eighth-seed Hawks (21-28) could not muster a base hit until the 10th inning, while only one position starter struck out less than three times.  Foley fanned the first 10 batters she faced before issuing the first of three walks.  She struck out at least two batters in 12 of the 13 innings, while striking out the side five times.

Her 30 strikeouts topped the previous Division II record by four, while also besting the current D-I (28) and D-III (25) marks.
 
In addition, Foley (30-4) upped her season strikeout total to 349, breaking her own UIndy single-season standard.  She also has strung together 25 consecutive pitching wins, good for the ninth longest such streak in D-II history.
 
Ninth-ranked and top-seeded UIndy faces No. 4-seed Bellarmine (35-14) in a winners' bracket match-up later this afternoon.  The division rivals split their four-game series in the regular season.  First pitch from the EastSide Centre is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.  Click here for the official tournament homepage.

Though not as dominate as Foley, Rockhurst starting pitcher Bridgette Sappington (16-16) was nearly as effective.  The freshman hurler scattered nine hits and struck out eight in the complete-game performance.
 
With both pitchers dealing, the first hit by either team did not come until the fifth when UIndy freshman Tayler Weck found a hole up the middle for a single.  The all-conference shortstop later stole second but was eventually stranded there.
 
After managing multiple base runners in just two of the first 12 innings, the Greyhounds finally plated a run in the 13th.  Freshman Katie Kelly double to left in with one out, good for the only extra-base hit of the day.  Junior Casey Williamson followed with a slow roller to first, but Rockhurst first-sacker Liz Desloge couldn't field it cleanly, allowing Williamson beat out the play.  Meanwhile, Kelly hustled through the bag at third and headed for home.  Desloge bobbled the ball again, allowing the game-winning run to cross as unearned.
 
Weck finished with three singles, while Williamson and Cori Eckerle each had a pair of knocks.  Williamson added a walk and a stolen base.
 
Freshman Lexie Zuniga had the Hawks' lone hit with an 11th-inning single.
