Box Score 2 EAST PEORIA, Ill. – After advancing to the semifinals of the
GLVC Championship Tournament, the UIndy softball team (42-11) saw its conference title hopes come to an end Saturday night, as fourth-seeded Bellarmine eliminated its division rival in a
4-0 final.
The Greyhounds dominated their previous two Saturday opponents, outscoring Illinois Springfield and William Jewell by a combined score of 14-0, but the Knights continued to have the Hounds' number, shutting down the UIndy offense for the second straight day.
BU pitcher Ally foster was nearly untouchable. The senior tossed seven scoreless innings, with a sixth-inning single by
Erika Goodwin representing the Hounds' only hit.
UIndy's
Morgan Foley (31-6) took the loss in the circle. She did not allow a single hit in nine consecutive innings heading into the game, but two pitches proved fatal Saturday evening when a second-inning double and sixth-inning homer plated two runs apiece for the Knights.
UIndy has now lost just four of its last 33 games, with three of those losses coming to Bellarmine.
UIndy will await the announcement of the NCAA tournament field Monday. NCAA.com will produce and stream the selection show at 10 a.m. ET. The region's top-eight teams will pair off into two double-elimination tournaments, held on campus sites May 9-11. The Hounds were ranked No. 1 in the region's previous rankings. The top-two teams will host the regionals.
vs. William JewellCenter fielder
Casey Williamson once again spearheaded the UIndy offense. The Indy native amassed two runs and three hits for the second consecutive game, capped by a two-run homer in the sixth inning versus the Cardinals (29-23). After becoming the first Greyhound in program history to steal career bag No. 100 earlier today, Williamson moved into third place in the school annals in career ribbies.
But the game had more or less been decided in the third when the Hounds piled on for five runs.
Erika Goodwin led off the frame with her first home run of the season. The 5-1 sophomore now has two dingers in 401 career plate appearances.
Goodwin's bomb sparked a crippling rally that saw a total of 10 Hounds came to the plate.
Taylor Russell,
Jenny Thompson and
Cori Eckerle all recorded RBI singles in the inning.
The five-run surge allowed starter
Morgan Foley to take a rest after pitching three scoreless – and hitless – frames.
Coryn Tirpak (3-1) came on to get the win by keeping the Cardinals off the board forfinal final three frames.
