EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 3-seed UIndy baseball team opened the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with a
3-2 walk-off win over 6-seed Lewis behind a stellar start from sophomore
Matthew Kaplanis at USI Field.
Kaplanis (4-3) and Lewis junior Eann Cox (6-5) each started out strong on the mound, keeping the offenses to a combined five hits through four complete innings.
Kaplanis, named to the All-GLVC East Division Second Team last night, carried a two-hitter into the fifth before the Flyers (26-24, 18-17 GLVC) plated the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly.
The Greyhounds (30-21, 23-13) immediately responded in the bottom of the frame, starting with a lead-off double to left by
Zach Jacobs. After
Dan Eliopulos bunted him over,
Luke Andrade smoked a liner over the shortstop's head to even the score.
Lewis regained the lead in the sixth, scoring an unearned run on a throwing error from
Jake Weinzapfel.
The seventh went scoreless for both squads, but the Hounds brought it even again in the eighth on an unearned run of their own. With two outs and Andrade on third,
Anthony Asalon chopped a grounder to first. Lewis' Joe Sparacio bobbled the ball, allowing Asalon to reach and Andrade to cross and tie the game, 2-2.
Weinzapfel had a chance to redeem his fielding blunder in the bottom of the ninth inning. With bases loaded and two outs in a tie game, the UIndy senior sent the Hounds into the second round with a sharp hit down the first base line. Jacobs came around to score, and the Greyhound bench rushed the field and swarmed Weinzapfel in celebration.
Andrade went 3 for 3 at the plate to lead the UIndy offense, and Jacobs finished 2 for 4 with a pair of runs.
Kaplanis baffled a majority of the Lewis lineup, giving up six hits between just two players. The win was his second complete game of the season, and dropped his season ERA to 2.15.
UIndy will face the winner of 2-seed Drury and 7-seed Truman State Friday at 12 p.m. ET.
