Panthers rally in the ninth to drop Greyhounds, 7-6

Box Score | Tournament Central

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –
A ninth-inning rally from the Drury Panthers spoiled the Greyhounds' late lead in their second round Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament contest Friday, as the 2-seed Panthers clawed back to win 7-6 behind four runs in the final frame.

Third-seeded UIndy (30-22) held a 6-3 lead heading into the ninth, but Drury (39-11), ranked 25th in the nation by Collegiate Baseball, stormed back to secure a spot in the semifinals.

The Panthers struck first on UIndy starter Jordan Tackett, taking an early 1-0 but failing to convert on an opportunity to score more.  With the bases full and only one out, Tackett walked in a run before punching out back-to-back batters looking to strand three and minimize the damage.

Will Landsheft, the GLVC's Pitcher of the Year, struck out the side in the Hounds first at bat, but in the second UIndy tagged him for two runs on a pair of hits. With runners on first and second, Luke Andrade smoked a two-out triple to deep right center, giving the Hounds a 2-1 lead.

Drury scored another run on Tackett in the top of the fourth, and the Hounds called Scott Mitchell out of the pen with two on and two out to relieve him. The move proved successful as the UIndy righty retired the first batter he faced to avoid further runs.

The Panthers regained the lead in the sixth, getting an RBI single from Cole Faulconer.

UIndy responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame, making a statement against the league's top pitcher. The Greyhounds brought home four runs on four hits, taking a 6-3 lead after six complete.

With Anthony Asalon at first, Alex Ritchie hit a sharp single to third to put two on. Joe Trennepohl then attempted to sacrifice them over, but Drury third baseman Ryan Colombo sailed the throw over the first baseman's head, bringing both runners in to score.

Kenny Mahala followed with a line-drive single to plate Trennepohl, making it 5-3, and Sean McCracken later drove a 0-2, two-out pitch up the middle to bring around Zach Jacobs.

The four earned runs and six total runs were the most any team has gotten on Landsheft all season.

After two scoreless innings, the Greyhounds were three outs from a trip to the semifinals, but Drury scored four runs on three hits and an error. With two outs and the bases loaded, Faulconer lined a single to left center, bringing home the tying and go ahead runs.

UIndy put two on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Drury's Colombo struck out Mahala to end the game.

Andrade went 2 for 3 at the dish, driving in a pair of runs. Trennepohl was 2 for 5 with two runs scored.

The Hounds now face Truman State in a win-or-go-home game. The winner will meet Drury tomorrow in the semifinal.
