INDIANAPOLIS - A trio of 20-point scorers helped UIndy vanquish visiting Bellarmine 89-72 in GLVC East play Thursday night in Nicoson Hall.
Princess German led the way with a career-high 28 points, followed by
Nicole Anderson's season-high 25 and
Kelly Walter's 20.
Those three were a big part of UIndy's most prolific game of the season. The Greyhounds (7-7, 4-2 GLVC) scored a season-best 89 points, shot over 53 percent from the floor (24-4%), and sank a remarkable 34 of 40 free throws.
Bellarmine (8-5, 3-2 GLVC) was limited to just over 37 percent from the floor, including a 4-for-18 clip from long range.
Anderson, who scored 15 points in the first half at Rockhurst last Saturday, matched that total with 15 in the opening period against the Knights. Anderson was perfect from the floor, going 4-for-4 from the field and 6-for-6 at the charity stripe.
A frenetic start played in the Greyhounds' favor, as UIndy went 5-for-5 out of the gate and sprinted to a 15-7 lead by the first media break.
Bellarmine quickly sank into foul trouble, putting the Hounds in the bonus before the second media timeout. UIndy capitalized by going 11 of 12 from the free throw line.
UIndy held its largest lead at 32-18 with seven minutes remaining, but the Knights sliced into the deficit and went into the half down 42-34.
Anderson's performance was just part of a stellar 20 minutes for the Hounds, who went 14-for-25 (.560) as a team. Bellarmine put up 14 more shots than UIndy – mainly due to 11 offensive rebounds and 10 forced turnovers – but managed just five second chance points and 36 percent shooting overall.
The second half belonged to German, who scored 20 of her 28 on the strength of an 11-for-14 free throw line performance.
Although the Greyhounds led wire-to-wire, the Knights fought back in the second half, getting as close as two points (54-52) on a Destony Curry triple with 11:39 remaining. A three-pointer from German on the ensuing possession ended the Knights' 9-0 drive and cooled BU's momentum.
Curry's three began a five minute drought for the visitors, as UIndy tore off an 11-0 run to steal momentum and force Bellarmine to play catch-up.
The Knights committed 29 personal fouls for the game, helping the Hounds pull away down the stretch by converting freebies.
Walter totaled her 20 points on 5-for-12 shooting, including three triples, and went 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Only two other Greyhounds scored:
Devin Ferguson tallied nine and
Sarah Costello had seven. Costello matched a career-high with six assists.
UIndy is back in action Saturday when Southern Indiana visits. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
