game notes* record as of Jan. 21ON TAPThe Greyhounds finish their four-game homestand hosting McKendree Thursday at 5:30 p.m. ET and Illinois Springfield Saturday at 1 p.m.
ABOUT THE BEARCATSMcKendree is off to a slow start this season, entering Thursday's game with a 2-13 overall record (1-6 GLVC). The Bearcats are coming off of a win, however, defeating Illinois Springfield 70-61 Monday night for their first conference win of the season.
Caty Ponce (11.9 points), Gabrielle Williams (11.5) and Jameeka Bouie (10.6) each average double figures for the Bearcats, and Williams paces the squad with 6.1 boards per game. Williams' .587 shooting mark also leads the conference.
The Bearcats rank 15th in the GLVC scoring just 61.2 points per game, right behind UIndy's 61.4. McKendree's team defense is last in the league, allowing over 70 points per game to the opposition.
Melissa Ringhausen is entering her 17th season as the head coach of the McKendree University women's basketball program. Under Ringhausen's leadership in the NAIA, McKendree qualified for the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship nine times in 14 years and finished in the NAIA Division I top 25 in four of the last eight seasons.
The two squads have met just three times, but UIndy has won all three by an average margin of 27 points. The Hounds won 102-72 last season in Lebanon, Ill.
ABOUT THE PRAIRIE STARSA recent loss to McKendree set Illinois Springfield back to 5-10 (1-6 GLVC) for the season, and is part of a larger 1-7 stretch over the last eight games for the Prairie Stars.
UIS does not have any individual averaging double figures, but does have seven different players scoring seven-plus points per game. Syerra Cunningham leads the squad with 7.4 rebounds per game, and is shooting an even 50 percent (52-104) from the floor this season.
The Prairie Stars are giving up just 62.9 points per game, sixth-best in the GLVC. UIS is also fifth in rebounding margin at +5.3 per game.
Chad Oletzke enters his third season at the helm of the Illinois Springfield women's basketball program. Prior to joining the Prairie Stars, Oletzke spent three seasons as an assistant at South Dakota State University.
UIndy has dominated Illinois Springfield in four all-time meetings, winning by an average of 32.3 points. Last season the Greyhounds won 73-51 on the road.
LAST WEEKUIndy split a pair of contests versus GLVC East rivals Bellarmine and Southern Indiana. The Hounds began the week with a blowout 89-72 victory over the Knights Thursday, good for their largest margin of victory this season. UIndy had three 20-point scorers, led by
Princess German's career-high 28.
Southern Indiana capped off Saturday's game with a 24-9 run to seal a 67-57 win over the Greyhounds.
Complete recaps and box scores from the games are on pgs. 12-13 of the notes.
GOOD KNIGHTThe Greyhounds' 89-72 win over Bellarmine was by far the most prolific offensive performance of the campaign. UIndy's 89 points is 12 points more than its previous season high, and is the first 80-point output since an 85-70 victory over the Knights near the end of the 2013-14 season.
Individually, UIndy had three 20-point scorers in
Princess German (28 points),
Nicole Anderson (25) and
Kelly Walter (20). It was the first time in at least 15 years the Hounds pulled that off (since game-by-game statistics became available in 2000-2001).
FILL IT UPJunior
Princess German went on an absolute tear against the Knights and Screaming Eagles last week, averaging 26.5 points on a stellar 17-for-25 (.680) shooting clip. She went 4-for-7 from long range and added 15 of 19 free throws.
Against the Knights, German scored 20 of her 28 in the second period to help UIndy cruise to the victory. Two days later she nearly matched a UIndy single-game record, going 9-for-10 from the floor against the Screaming Eagles. The best perfect shooting performance in program history was a 10-for-10 day from Samantha Meissel in 2009.
"THE NIC"UIndy is in the midst of a four-game home stretch, hosting McKendree and Illinois Springfield after facing Bellarmine and Southern Indiana last week. The Greyhounds are 4-3 in Nicoson Hall this season.
