KANSAS CITY, Mo.- The #24 UIndy men's tennis team fell just short in its bid for its first Great Lakes Valley Conference title in 20 years Sunday, dropping a 5-4 decision to #15 Drury in the league championship match.
In a rematch of last year's Men's Tennis Championship final, the Greyhounds (14-4) were down 2-1 after doubles play.
Luke Hubert and
Fausto Cordova were the winners in the three-spot, defeating Drury's Damien Minguez and Sacha Mourier 8-3.
Christoph Drechsler and
Tony Kostadinov fell 8-4 to the Panthers' Jorge Nadal and Maximilian Hepp, while
Andrea Morlet and
Marco Razo lost 8-3 at the hands of Chritian Isben and Sebastien Amato.
Hepp bested Drechsler 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 to open singles play, but UIndy rebounded with a 6-3, 6-1 win from Kostadinov at No. 2. The Panthers then took a W at No. 5, with Mourier coming out on top of Razo 6-4, 6-4.
After a Hubert win 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, the match came down to the Hounds needing wins from both Morlet and Cordova in the four and six spots, respectively. Morlet pulled out a three-set win 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, but Cordova was unable to close out his three-set match, falling to Nadal 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.
UIndy now awaits the 2015 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional brackets, which will be announced live on NCAA.com Tuesday, April 28 at 8:30 p.m. EST. As the regional rankings currently stand, the Greyhounds are in the #2 spot, behind Drury.
