KANSAS CITY, Mo.- The UIndy women's tennis team earned is first Great Lakes Valley Conference championship since 2005, taking a 5-2 win over #20 Drury in the championship final.
UIndy, who had not been in the final since 2007, defeated a dominant Drury (21-2) team which had won seven of the last eight GLVC titles, and came into the event as the top seed from the West Division.
The Greyhounds (13-5), who entered the tournament as the East Division's top seed, took a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the match.
Stephanie Hirsch and
Florence Renard combined to defeat Drury's Stefanie Monsch and Lara Muller at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, while
Allie Smith and
Macey Speer earned their point over Hadeil Ali and Larissa Karl via the Panthers retiring the match early.
Dana Olsen and
Brooke Boyts played in the No. 3 spot, and fell to Drury's Samantha Zambrano and Weronika Halicka 8-4.
In singles play, Boyts picked up a win via Karl retiring, while Renard defeated Monsch 6-2, 7-5. Drury then picked up its only singles win, with Zambrano besting
Selenay Heper 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Smith iced the Greyhound championship win with a 6-4, 7-5 defeat of Muller at the No. 3 spot. The No. 1 and No. 5 singles matches did not finish.
UIndy now awaits the release of the NCAA Division II Regional, April 28 at 8:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.
