Hounds advance in GLVC losers’ bracket

EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The second-seeded UIndy softball team split a pair of games on the opening day of the 2015 GLVC Championship Tournament Friday.  The Greyhounds (39-10) began postseason play with a 3-0 loss to No. 7-seed Illinois Springfield but rebounded with a 8-0 win versus three-seed Southern Indiana to remain alive in the double-elimination tourney.

The Greyhounds start Saturday with another loser-go-home contest when they face Truman State at 12 p.m. ET.  Live stats and a free video stream will be available.

Taylor Bowlby tossed a five-hit shutout in the day's opener to earn the win for the Prairie Stars (32-20).  Though she struck out only two Greyhounds, the sophomore hurler walked just one while inducing 11 groundouts on the way to her 20th win of the season.

Meanwhile, Morgan Foley (29-6) fanned 12 and notched her 21st complete game, but the Stars found a way to plate three runs against the reigning Division II Pitcher of the Year.  An RBI single from designated hitter Brittany Miller got the Stars on the board in third inning before two walks and three hits conspired for two more UIS runs in the fifth.

Offensively, UIndy's best chance came in the sixth inning.  The Hounds loaded the bases with only one out but a pair of ground balls followed to end the threat.

Junior Erika Goodwin was the only Greyhound with two hits, as the Indy native finished 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.  Senior Sydney Russell had a single and a walk, while Casey Williamson and Natalie Lalich added a single apiece.

In the first elimination game of the day, the Greyhounds bounced 13th-ranked Southern Indiana (37-9) with an 8-0 rout in six innings.  Foley again got the start and tossed four scoreless frames to get to win (30-6).  The decision made Foley the first player in school history with multiple 30-win seasons in a career.

Junior reliever Coryn Tirpak finished off the Screaming Eagles to complete the shutout.

After not scoring a run in the first game of the day, the Greyhound bats generated five of their runs on just three swings, as Williamson, S. Russell and Jenny Thompson all had extra-base hits.

Williamson set the tone with a two-run bomb in top of the first.  After S. Russell coaxed a walk, Williamson launched a 2-2 pitch over the center field fence, good for her 40th career dinger.

Up 3-0 later in the game, the Hounds piled on with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.  S. Russell recorded her first home run of the season with a solo shot, while Thompson's two-run double all but clinched it.

Katie Kelly finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Jessie Noone also had a pair of hits and a run scored, and Taylor Weck had a successful sac bunt and a walk.
