EAST PEORIA, Ill. – In an epic, extra-inning finale to the 2015 GLVC Softball Championship Tournament, top-seeded Missouri-St. Louis (44-6) slipped past No. 2-seed UIndy (42-12) with a 4-0 victory Sunday. The Tritons were held hitless for the initial seven frames but managed a four-run rally in the eighth to earn their third consecutive conference title.
Sunday's pitching match-up featured two of the 10 finalists for the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player of the Year award. UIndy's
Morgan Foley and UMSL's Hannah Perryman combined to toss all 16 innings, striking out a total of 24 and allowing just four hits all day.
Foley (33-7) spun seven no-hit innings before the Tritons finally scored. With the Foley's pitch count approaching 180 for the day and 630 for the tournament, UMSL's Brianna Butler managed a one-out walk. A fly out followed for the second out, but the Tritons bats cashed in with another walk, an RBI single and a three-run home run to plate all four tallies.
Meanwhile, Perryman (26-3) gave up an infield hit in the third – a single by
Katie Kelly – but went on to retire the final 17 batters she faced to earn the win.
Prior to the eighth, the second-ranked Tritons mounted their best threat in the top of the sixth when a UIndy error and two walks loaded the bases with nobody out. Foley struck out GLVC Freshman of the Year Jennah Perryman on three pitches, however, followed by a 9-2 double play by right fielder
Jessie Noone and catcher
Jenny Thompson. Noone charged a fly ball in shallow right, made the catch then crow-hopped and gunned down Alex Stupek at the plate for the final out of the inning.
The Greyhounds and the rest of the region await the announcement of the 2015 NCAA Division II Championship field. The selection show will air on NCAA.com Monday at 10 a.m. ET. UIndy was ranked second in the previous Midwest rankings. The top eight teams from the country's eight regions will qualify.
