GREENWOOD, Ind. – The UIndy women's tennis squad won the NCAA Midwest Regional for the first time in program history, dropping 48th-ranked Drury 5-2 at Center Grove High School.
Exactly two weeks ago the 47th-ranked Greyhounds vanquished the Panthers 5-2 to clinch their first Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship in ten years. Sunday, Drury was again on the wrong end of a historic UIndy victory – this time resulting in the Hounds' first-ever NCAA Division II "Sweet 16" appearance.
As they had in Saturday's victory over Ferris State, the Greyhounds swept all three doubles to take a commanding 3-0 lead into singles play.
Allie Smith and
Macey Speer were first off the courts with an 8-3 victory over Ali Hadeil and Samata Zambrano in No. 2.
The No. 1 doubles tandem of
Stephanie Hirsch and
Florence Renard followed suit with an 8-3 win over Stefanie Monsch and Lara Muller.
With all eyes on court three,
Brooke Boyts and
Dana Olsen pulled off a remarkable 8-6 win in No. 3 doubles against Lucy Givens and Weronika Halicka.
Boyts carried that momentum into singles action, and secured the Hounds' fourth point with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over Givens in No. 6.
Action between the two squads continued, as the Panthers picked up their first point in No. 4 singles, where Zambrano defeated
Selenay Heper 6-1, 6-2.
Singles 2 and 5 finished almost simultaneously, with Drury's Monsch winning 6-2, 6-2 over Renard on court two. But the point held little value once Speer sealed the match with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Halicka on court five.
The win marked UIndy's 12th in a row against D-II opponents.
In a couple weeks the Greyhounds will travel to Surprise, Arizona for the NCAA Division II National Championship, and will meet the winner of Central Regional site one.
