WESTFIELD, Ind. – A six-run eighth inning from Drury lifted the Panthers past UIndy in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, 7-2.
After holding the seventh-seeded Panthers (28-22-1) scoreless for seven full innings, the two-seed Hounds (33-18) gave up five hits and had a costly error that led to the big inning.
2015 GLVC Co-Pitcher of the Year
Matthew Kaplanis was spotless through seven, but got into trouble to start the eighth inning, surrendering consecutive singles out of the gate. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, and Luke Tewes followed with a two-RBI single to left center, tying the game 2-2.
Reliever
Brett Collins was called out of the bullpen, and intentionally walked a batter to load the bases and set up a force play. But the next batter, Mike Rafter, smoked a bases-clearing double into left center to make it 5-2. A throwing error from
Colin Hawk added another, bringing the lead to 6-2.
Drury added another run in the top of the ninth, putting the pressure on UIndy to overcome a 7-2 deficit.
The Panthers' Trevor Richards held UIndy to seven hits and allowed two runs (both unearned), throwing a remarkable 141 pitches before being pulled in the ninth.
The Greyhounds broke what was a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third, scoring twice on a pair of hits and an error to take a 2-0 lead.
Zach Jacobs doubled down the left field line, and
Anthony Asalon reached on a throwing error from the Drury third baseman. The pair put on a double steal to advance a base.
With two outs on the board,
Sean McCracken drove both home on a single into left center field.
UIndy wouldn't score again, stifled by Richards across the final six innings.
The Greyhounds face Bellarmine in a win-or-go-home scenario at 6:30 p.m. ET.
