WESTFIELD, Ind. – UIndy's
Jordan Tackett stumped the Bellarmine offense Thursday night, helping the Greyhounds take a must-win game over the Knights, 5-1, in the loser's bracket of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
Tackett (6-4), who typically starts the seven-inning second game of a series, had no trouble making his longest appearance of the season while picking up his third consecutive winning decision.
The Knights (28-24) finally got to Tackett in the ninth inning, plating a run and chasing him from the mound with two runners in scoring position. Freshman
Dylan Stutsman came in and recorded three consecutive outs to pick up his third save of the season.
Both teams had just two hits through the first four frames, but in the top of the fifth UIndy (34-18) scored four on five hits.
After
Alex Ritchie led off with a single,
Daniel Lee delivered a two-run bomb over the left field fence. The towering shot was his seventh dinger of the year.
Trevor Forde and
Zach Jacobs continued the hit streak with consecutive base knocks, and
Anthony Asalon followed with a two-RBI single to make it 4-0.
Later in the top of the eighth
Colin Hawk smoked a solo home run into left, lifting the Greyhound lead up to 5-0.
Tackett went eight-plus innings, allowing one run and seven hits while striking out three.
Jacobs and Forde each finished with multiple hits and scored a run, and Asalon and Lee delivered two RBIs apiece.
The win continued the Greyhounds' run in the conference tournament. UIndy will face the loser of William Jewell-Drury Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET.
