WESTFIELD, Ind. – William Jewell eliminated UIndy baseball from the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Friday afternoon, winning 8-1 in the loser's bracket.
The loss also likely spelled the end of the Hounds' season, leaving their record at 34-19 overall and 26-10 in the GLVC.
The third-seeded Cardinals (37-16) got an unearned run across in the third, grabbing an early 1-0 lead. Two-seed UIndy had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the inning, as
Daniel Lee nearly scored on a
Zach Jacobs single to right. Lee was called out on a play at the plate to end the inning.
WJC broke open the game with five runs in the following frame, getting RBI base hits from Dane Erbst, Luke Lucchetti and Bryan Porting to take a 6-0 advantage.
Sprinkle (8-2) was pulled in the top of the fifth after surrendering two early base runners. It was an uncharacteristic start for the All-GLVC East Division second-teamer, giving up a season-high five earned runs.
The Cardinals tacked on two more in the top of the seventh on reliever
Adam Cornwell, putting the Greyhounds in a deep hole with only nine outs remaining.
UIndy went 2-for-11 across those final three at-bats, getting a solo homer from
Luke Andrade to break the shutout.
Seniors
Josh Witt and
Brett Collins each pitched an inning in what is probably their last games wearing the Greyhound jersey. Fellow classmates
Sean McCracken,
Zach Jacobs,
Daniel Lee,
Luke Andrade and
Zach Howard also finished their collegiate careers Friday.
Andrade led the offense with a bunt single and home run, and
Trevor Forde,
Brady Thomas,
Storm Joop and Lee each tallied a hit.
Drury starter Preston Felgate (6-0) picked up the win after throwing 7.2 while allowing a run on six hits.
