INDIANAPOLIS – In a match-up of nationally-ranked squads, the No. 10 UIndy softball team took down 23rd-ranked Ashland, 7-3, Saturday morning to advance in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional 2. The victory bumps the Greyhounds (43-12) to Sunday's regional final at noon ET.
Â
Saturday marked the fifth time UIndy and Ashland have met in the postseason, with the Hounds winning all five decisions. UIndy eliminated the Eagles from the 2011, 2013 and 2014 regionals. Ashland now moves to the losers' bracket to face Trevecca Nazarene, with the winner facing UIndy Sunday for the right to move on to the Midwest Super Regional.
Â
Starting pitcher
Morgan Foley hit a number of milestones Saturday. Her fourth strikeout of the day upped her season total to 387, breaking her own single-season school record. She also broke former-teammate Jennifer DeMotte's program mark for appearances in a season, while tying DeMotte's single-season win record.
Â
In the circle, Foley finished with eight Ks while allowing just three hits and three walks in seven frames of work. All three of the Eagles' runs were unearned.
Â
Offensively, the Hounds did all their damage in two innings, scoring three runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth. Freshman
Jessie Noone cranked one to the left field wall for a two-run double, while
Jenny Thompson cleared the center field fence for two more tallies.Â
Taylor Russell added an RBI double, while Noone and Russell each scored on an error.
Â
Natalie Lalich finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, T. Russell also had two hits and two runs, while
Sydney Russell and
Katie Kelly each added a single.
