CLEVELAND – Sitting at No. 63 after the winter standings, the University of Indianapolis' streak of three top-ten finishes in the Division II Learfield Sports Directors' Cup seemed in jeopardy. A remarkable spring season sent the Greyhounds soaring, however, landing them in the No. 7 spot of the final D-II standings.
The strong effort secured the program's fourth straight top-ten finish and 11th top-20 finish in the last 12 years. UIndy totaled 598 total points, just five behind sixth-place Wingate, scoring a school-record 415 points from the spring season alone. Prior to this season the highest-scoring spring was 324.25 points during last year's record-setting overall fourth-place finish.
A mid-spring release had the Hounds in 15th overall – led by women's golf scoring 100 points alone – but the Crimson and Grey leapt even higher with the final results of four more teams. A Division-II "World Series" appearance from softball earned 78 points, while men's golf brought home 61.5 points from a 14th-place showing at the D-II National Championship. Men's and women's track and field combined to score 47.5, as well.
The Midwest Region proved its might yet again, supplying four of the top seven schools. GLIAC-member Grand Valley State finished on top, followed by Ashland (2nd, GLIAC), Lewis (4th, GLVC) and UIndy.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women's and seven men's. Complete standings and the scoring structure can be found on NACDA's website at
