Hounds earn sweep, Foley sets NCAA strikeout mark

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. – All-America pitcher Morgan Foley added to her ever-growing legacy in the first of two UIndy softball victories Saturday. Already the NCAA all-division record holder for strikeouts in a game (30 in 13 innings), the senior hurler out of Louisville, Ky., set a new Division II benchmark by punching out the maximum 21 batters in a seven-inning, 2-0 no-hitter versus Hillsdale at the Music City Invitational. The previous mark of 20 was shared by Dori Stankewitz (Florida Southern, 1987) and Hannah Perryman (Missouri-St. Louis, 2014).

Foley would go on to get a second win in the circle, earning the "W" in relief in a 6-5 comeback win versus 2015 NCAA Tourney participant Trevecca Nazarene. Junior Tayler Weck provided the fireworks offensively with a two-run, go-ahead homer in the sixth.

All told, Foley faced just 25 batters on the day, recording all 21 outs via the strikeout while walking four. She fanned each of the first eight batters before her counterpart Ainsley Ellison coaxed a two-out walk. None of the the Charger base runners would reach second, however, as Foley clinched her fourth career no-no while upping her record to 4-0 on the season.

"I walk into every game with the mindset of wanting to have 21 strikeouts," said the veteran hurler, "but throughout the game, I don't think about it; I don't want to jinx myself so I try not to think about it. So I guess today, I knew we had to get two wins so I was going to do everything I could to help my team get two wins, two regional wins that will help us later in the season."

Offensively, the Greyhounds got all the runs they would need in the second inning. Consecutive singles from Jenny Thompson, Marisa Brown and Emma Varsbergs kicked off the frame, followed by a bases-loaded walk from freshman Taylor Podschweit – good for her first career ribbie – and an RBI groundout from junior Katie Kelly.

UINDY 6, TREVECCA NAZARENE 4
The host Trojans (6-8) jumped on game-two starter Miranda Tamayo with three first-inning runs. Though it did not get the ball out of the infield in the frame, TNU benefitted from a walk, two well-placed bunts and a Greyhound fielding error to take the early lead.

Tamayo was chased two innings later when a leadoff homer was followed by another error to start the Trojan third. Foley (5-0) returned to the circle to finish the game, allowing one run and striking out 10 over the final 4 2/3 innings.

Down 4-0, the Greyhound bats finally broke through with a big sixth inning. Five Hounds crossed the plate in the game-changing frame, highlighted by a two-run single by Varsburgs and punctuated by a two-run bomb by Weck. Weck's dinger, which proved to be the game winner, marked just her second career round-tripper and her first since April of 2014.

In the top half of the seventh, Natalie Lalich continued her power surge, as her solo shot gave the Hounds a welcomed insurance run. Lalich has now homered four times in the season's first six games.

Trevecca answered with one more tally in the final half inning and sent the potential winning run at the plate, but Foley slammed the door with her 10th and final strikeout to end the Trojan threat and seal the win.

UIndy concludes play at the Music City Invitational Sunday with a third straight in-region opponent. After two days of action at Drake's Creek Park in Hendersonville, Tenn., the Hounds head to the nearby Nashville and the campus of Trevecca Nazarene University to take on Ohio Dominican Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. Live stats and audio will once again be available at UIndyAthletics.com/coverage.
