Defense, free throw shooting help Hounds punch ticket to GLVC quarterfinals

LEBANON, Mo. – The University of Indianapolis women's basketball team notched a post season win for the seventh consecutive season with a 60-47 win over McKendree in the opening round of the 2016 GLVC Women's Basketball Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Princess German poured in 22 points for the Greyhounds and knocked down all 10 of her free throw attempts on the day. Her partner in the back court, sophomore Sarah Costello, added 16 points and tied for the team lead with eight rebounds as UIndy improved to 10-19 on the year and punched their ticket to the quarterfinals next weekend at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo.

"That was a phenomenal, hard-fought win for our team today," Head coach Constantin Popa told WICR after the game. "We were able to lock in on some of their best shooters on the defensive end and we felt like that threw them out of their rhythm. Offensively, we knew that points were going to be tough to come by so we put a lot of emphasis on getting to the free throw line and we did just that and that played a major role in getting the win."

The teams traded baskets and the lead in the opening five minutes, but the Greyhounds started to heat up from the floor following the media timeout. UIndy closed out the opening 10 minutes on an 11-2 run, getting three pointers from German, Anderson and Costello to take a 16-8 lead into the second quarter.

UIndy's offense cooled off slightly in the second quarter, but the Greyhounds kept the Bearcats in check at the other end of the floor. The Greyhounds limited McKendree to just 24 percent (6-for-25) shooting in the first half and forced the Bearcats to miss all five of their three pointers on their way to a 26-14 lead at the break.

The Hounds maintained their double-digit lead when the second half began, stretching their advantage to as many as 14 points with just under five minutes to go in the quarter.

The Bearcats began to pick up momentum on the offensive end and cut the lead to single digits with a pair of free throws that made it 33-24 with 2:10 left in the frame. UIndy answered right back with another Costello triple that made put the Hounds back in front by double figures and eventually led 38-27 after three.

UIndy opened the final quarter with the first four points to take their largest lead of the game, but McKendree battled back at both ends of the floor to cut the lead to 44-39 with three minutes to play. But once again, it was Costello that came up big on the offensive end for UIndy, halting the Bearcat run with a giant three-point play that put the Hounds back up by eight.

At the free throw line was where the Greyhounds closed the game out as UIndy recorded their final 13 points at the line over the last three minutes to put the game out of reach and send the Hounds to the quarterfinals in St. Charles.

The Hounds held McKendree to just 32.1 percent (18-for-56) shooting on the day and just 2-for-15 from behind the three point line. UIndy shot 34.1 percent (14-for-41) from the field, going 6-for-16 from long range and a whopping 26-for-32 at the charity stripe.

Rebounds were 35-34 in favor of the Greyhounds with Anderson and Costello grabbing eight each to lead all players. Both teams committed 15 turnovers with McKendree holding an 18-12 edge in points off turnovers.

The Greyhounds will take the floor at the Family Arena on Thursday, Mar. 3 for quarterfinal action. Opponent and start time will be announced at a later date.
