LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 19th-ranked UIndy men's tennis team won their sixth match in a row Saturday at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex at Bellarmine University, sweeping the host Knights 9-0.
The Greyhounds improved to 12-2 overall and 4-0 in-conference, extending their regular season GLVC win streak to 16 matches dating back to the 2013 season. Head Coach
Malik Tabet also kept his perfect record against the Knights, moving to 4-0 during his tenure.
UIndy – ranked atop the initial NCAA Midwest Region rankings released Wednesday – began Saturday's match with a three-point doubles sweep.
The closest match came at No. 1, where
Arklon Huertas del Pino and
Andrea Morlet teamed up to defeat Bellarmine's top duo of Jose Legarreta and Alex Swords, 8-6.
At No. 2 doubles,
Christoph Drechsler and
Magnus Mueller defeated Matthew Momper and Nathan Walroth, 8-5, improving their dual record to a team-best 12-2.
Finally,
Luke Hubert and
Marco Razo moved to 11-2 after an 8-1 rout against Lauren de Boeck and Logan Allara.
The Hounds' 3-0 lead quickly swelled as they took care of business at each singles position.
Huertas del Pino defeated Legarreta in straight sets at No. 1, 6-3, 6-0, and Hubert did the same against Swords at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1. Huertas del Pino and Hubert are each 22-3 overall this season, with a chance to approach the program's all-time single-season wins mark of 28 set by Ross Johnson (2004-05) depending on the Hounds' postseason run.
Hubert also inched one step closer to the career singles wins record with his 79th victory.
The rest of the singles matches Saturday followed suit, as Drechsler topped Momper 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 to improve to 10-3.
At No. 4, Mueller defeated Walroth 6-2, 6-2, and one court over at No. 5 Razo bested de Boeck by the same score.
Finally, Morlet handed Vladmimir Danicic a 6-0, 6-3 loss at No. 6 singles.
UIndy has just two matches remaining in the regular season, first traveling to in-state rival Saint Joseph's next Friday, Apr. 22, for a 3 p.m. match. The Hounds finish with a Senior Day match the following day against Southern Indiana at 2 p.m. at Center Grove High School.
