Hounds return to winning ways with 8-1 road victory at Bellarmine

LOUSIVILLE, Ky. – Following their first conference defeat in two calendar years, UIndy (10-6) returned to the win column on Saturday with an 8-1 victory over GLVC rival Bellarmine (9-8).

The Hounds entered Saturday's match as the newly ranked No. 2 team in the NCAA Midwest Regional poll. Wednesday marked the release of the first official NCAA Rankings, with subsequent polls coming each Wednesday for the remainder of the season. As the second seed, UIndy has positioned itself nicely to host the Regional round of the NCAA tournament.

Saturday did nothing to hurt that cause, as the Greyhounds came out strong to sweep the doubles session. Allie Smith and Macey Speer received a valiant effort from Caitlin Hanley and Maggie Walroth in the second spot, however the senior duo escaped with a crucial 9-8 tiebreak victory, clinching the doubles sweep.

Meanwhile, Hanna Volikova and Florence Renard moved to 11-3 on the year at first doubles, topping Mary Elaine Kuo and Nadia Sabie 8-3. At No. 3, Selenay Heper and Paige Olsen edged Bess Fley and Sydney Thompson, 8-6.

UIndy gathered wins in the 1-5 spots of the singles session, four of which coming in straight set fashion. Volikova was tested the most in the top spot, needing a tiebreak to defeat Walroth (6-4, 5-7, 10-6). The freshman is now 12-1 on the year, with 11 of those wins coming at first singles.

Volikova's win came after the Hounds had already clinched the team victory. Renard (No. 2), Smith (No. 3), Speer (No. 4) and Heper (No. 5) all cruised to straight set victories, while Olsen dropped her match to Marissa Kovach 6-3, 6-4 in the sixth spot.

Just two regular season matches remain for the Hounds before the start of the GLVC Championships. UIndy will make the short trip to Saint Joseph's on Friday before returning home Saturday to host Southern Indiana for Senior Day. Two wins and a strong showing in the conference tournament should be enough to cement UIndy into the number two spot in the region.
