PLAINFIELD, Ill. – UIndy's quest for its second straight Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship began Friday afternoon at Plainfield East High School.
Entering the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed in the GLVC East Division, the Greyhounds (13-6) opposed a familiar foe in their opening round match. Friday marked the fourth straight postseason meeting between UIndy and Missouri-St. Louis (17-8), with the Hounds now winners in three of those four following a 5-2 first round victory.
The Hounds took the ever-important lead after doubles play, picking up wins at both first and second doubles.
Hanna Volikova and
Florence Renard, both fresh off being named All-GLVC selections, first topped Salome Bleuler and Patricia Maya, 8-3, at No. 1. The win moved the pair to 14-3 on the season.
Shortly after,
Allie Smith and
Macey Speer tallied their team-best 16th win of the year, edging Jennifer Hauer and Renee Verboven 8-6.
UMSL would salvage a point in the third spot, with Chandler Duchaine and Natalia Carvalhais besting
Selenay Heper and
Dana Olsen, 8-4.
Indianapolis' top-two of Volikova and Renard continued their dominance in the singles session, earning two quick decisions to give the Hounds a commanding lead.
Opposing an All-GLVC selection of her own in Salome Bleuler, Renard cruised to a quick 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 2 slot, moving the sophomore to 13-5 on the year.
Recently named the GLVC Freshman of the Year, Volikova followed in the first position with her 15th win of the spring, a straight set (6-2, 6-2) decision over Jennifer Hauer.
Selenay Heper's 6-2, 6-1 win over Natalia Carvalhais in the fifth slot clinched the team victory for UIndy, also good for her 15th win.
UIndy will look to advance to their third consecutive GLVC Championship tomorrow when they'll meet West rival Drury. The Panthers enter with a 17-2 record after sweeping USI in their opening match, and represent the No. 1 seed in the West Division.Â
