ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – For the third straight season the UIndy men's tennis team is heading to the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship, defeating Missouri-St. Louis 5-0 in Saturday's semifinal match in the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex at Lewis University.
After a 5-0 win in the quarterfinal yesterday, the 21st-ranked Hounds (16-2) put together another spotless performance against the 48th-ranked Tritons (17-5) to earn both an important Midwest region victory and their third consecutive appearance in the conference finals.
UIndy got off to a quick start by winning all three doubles matches, beginning at No. 2 with
Christoph Drechsler and
Magnus Mueller. The UIndy pair defeated UMSL's Fabian Frank and Max Heath, 8-2, winning their tenth match in a row.
Next to finish was No. 1 doubles, where
Arklon Huertas del Pino and
Andrea Morlet dropped Kristoffer Lindal and Robert White, 8-6.
Finally,
Luke Hubert and
Marco Razo won the Hounds' third point with an 8-5 decision over Dario Vidaurre and Alberto Maza Martin.
In singles play, Huertas del Pino finished first with a 6-0, 6-1 straight-set sweep over Frank in No. 1 singles. The All-GLVC selection improved his singles record to a team-best 25-3.
Drechsler, another All-GLVC honoree, wrapped up the semifinal victory with a 6-3, 6-2 No. 2 singles win against Cobi Ho.
The Hounds – who have fallen to Drury in each of the past two GLVC Championship matches – will be seeking their eighth overall conference crown and first since 1995 tomorrow (Sunday) at 10 a.m. ET. UIndy faces GLVC East rival Southern Indiana in the title match, setting up a rematch of the regular season finale, which the Hounds won 5-4.
