ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Weather forced the semifinals of the GLVC Championships inside to Lewis University's Jack Oremus Tennis Complex on Saturday. The 24th ranked Greyhounds (13-7) won't have an opportunity to defend their conference title, after falling to No. 20 Drury (18-2) 5-3.
The Panthers entered as the top seed of the GLVC West Division after a dominating, undefeated conference slate. Similarly to UIndy's first round opponent of UMSL, the Hounds and Panthers have also met in each of the past three GLVC tournaments. Drury had eliminated UIndy each of the prior two years before the Hounds finally broke through for a 5-2 win in last year's Championship match.
Indianapolis fell behind 2-1 following the doubles session, however
Allie Smith and
Macey Speer were able to scrape out a much-needed 9-8 tiebreak win over Hadeil Ali and Larissa Karl at No. 2
Hanna Volikova shrugged off a defeat at first doubles to tie the overall score at 2-2. The region's fourth ranked singles player notched her 16th win of the year in straight set fashion (6-1, 6-1) over Ali, No. 3 in the Midwest.
Shortly after, Smith, entering at No. 18 in the Midwest, was edged by seventh ranked Samanta Zambrano in straight sets (7-6, 6-4) at No. 3, putting Drury back ahead 3-2.
Larissa Karl followed at No. 4 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over
Macey Speer.
With their backs against the wall, trailing 4-2, the Hounds stayed alive with a three-set win from region No. 15
Florence Renard at No. 2. The sophomore joined Volikova with her 16th win of the year over Lara Muller, who entered at No. 5 in the region polls and 40th nationally.
Drury got its decisive fifth point in the fifth position, where Weronika Halicka defeated
Selenay Heper 6-2, 6-4 to send the Panthers to the title match.
Having entered the conference tournament ranked as the No. 2 team in the NCAA Midwest Region poll behind Drury, Indianapolis will more than likely still host the NCAA Regional. Last year, the Hounds won the Regional for the first time in program history.
