INDIANAPOLIS – A number of Greyhounds were recognized Tuesday with the announcement of the Great Lakes Valley Conference year-end honors. UIndy swept the major awards, with
Katharina Keilich being named both the Freshman and Player of the Year, while Brent Nicoson was chosen by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year. Additionally, senior
Brooke Beegle was added to the All-GLVC Team, and senior
Molly Ward was dubbed the team's James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award nominee.
Keilich becomes just the fourth player in GLVC history and the first Greyhound to garner both the league's top player and top rookie award in the same season. With a team-best 75.6 stroke average, Keilich won four events this academic year, including taking co-medalist honors at the GLVC Championships last month. A native of Wetzlar, Germany, Keilich heads into nationals ranked 33rd in Division II and third in the region according to the trusted Golfstat.com head-to-head player rankings.
The Greyhounds have now won the GLVC Women's Golf Player of the Year honor eight times overall, including each of the last four years.
Nicoson picked up his fourth GLVC Coach of the Year nod on the women's side after leading his squad to a record fifth-straight league championship and 10th overall. His Greyhounds led wire-to-wire at the recent GLVC Championships, shooting a 302-303-294--899. The 294 third-round card and 899 total score were both record performances, besting previous UIndy teams from 2012 and 2015, respectively.
Beegle, meanwhile, was one of five golfers added to the now 10-person All-GLVC Team. The Fishers, Ind., native and 2015 GLVC Player of the Year has compiled a 76.8 stroke average while notching three top-five and six top-10 finishes, including winning the individual title at the 149-golfer Perry Park Spring in March.
Tuesday's five additions were dubbed all-conference based on a vote by the league's coach. They join the top-five finishers from the GLVC Championship, a group that included Keilich and fellow co-medalist
Kylie Raines as well as sophomore
Paxton DeHaven.
Furthermore, the league recognized a nominee from each team for the 2016 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award, with UIndy senior
Molly Ward collecting the honor for UIndy. The student-athletes chosen were individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced in later this month.
