Four Greyhounds named GLVC Scholar-Athletes of the Year

INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference released its 2015-16 Winter and Spring Scholar-Athletes of the Year Thursday, with Matthew Kaplanis (baseball), Paxton DeHaven (women's golf), Morgan Foley (softball)  and Luke Hubert (men's tennis) all making the list. UIndy's quartet joins fall-honorees Hayden Janney (football) and Jacob Meyer (men's soccer) to give the Hounds six GLVC Scholar-Athletes in the 2015-16 academic year – most in the GLVC.

The league selects one student-athlete in each Conference sport to be designated the GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The award is based upon athletic accomplishments, both team and individual, and academic performance in the season upon which the award is based. Each GLVC member has the opportunity to nominate one individual from its team for the award. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average that meets Academic All-America standards (3.30), and freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award. The voting is completed by each member institution's Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR).

Picking up his second straight GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year nod, senior Matthew Kaplanis went 10-1 on the mound this season, compiling a 3.06 ERA in 94 innings pitched. The Fort Wayne, Ind., product tied for the league lead in wins, while his strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.25) was good for 13th in Division II. He garnered All-GLVC East Division First Team accolades, as well as All-Midwest Region First Team honors from both the NCBWA and the ABCA. Kaplanis graduated from UIndy last month with a 3.95 cumulative GPA as an accounting major, earning a spot on the All-GLVC Academic Team, the GLVC Council of Presidents' Academic Excellence Award list and the CoSIDA Academic All-District® Team.

Sophomore Paxton DeHaven helped the Greyhound women's golf squad to runner-up honors at the 2016 NCAA DII Championships. The all-conference, all-region and All-American Honorable Mention performer notched a top-10 finish in each of the season's final three tournaments, including a seventh-place showing at nationals. In the classroom, the Seymour, Ind., native has compiled a cumulative 3.62 GPA in Sports Management. She is the seventh UIndy women's golfer in the last nine seasons to be named GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Senior Morgan Foley recently wrapped up one of the all-time great careers in Division II softball history. The Louisville, Ky., native led the nation in strikeouts per game (12.8) in 2016 on the way to the second-highest career strikeout total in DII history (1,659). She won a school-record 40 games against just four losses, while compiling a miniscule 0.85 ERA. Foley garnered Pitcher of the Year honors at both the conference and regional levels and was later named one of three finalists for the Schutt Sports/NFCA DII National Player of the Year. The Communications graduate compiled a 3.54 GPA in her four years at UIndy and was bestowed the GLVC Council of Presidents' Academic Excellence Award as well as CoSIDA Academic All-America® Second Team honors.

The program's all-time leader in career victories, senior Luke Hubert became the first UIndy men's tennis player to garner GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors since Scott Riggle in 1999. A product of New Berlin, Wis., Hubert finished the season with a 25-5 singles record and a 21-7 doubles mark. He helped the Greyhounds to their second consecutive NCAA "Sweet 16" appearances, as well as their first GLVC Championship since 1995. The Biology major and Chemistry minor graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 3.98 GPA, while also earning the ITA Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship and Leadership Award for the Midwest Region.
