Greyhounds end season at GLVC Championship Tournament to No. 3 Lewis

EAST PEORIA, Ill. - The UIndy volleyball team ended its season on Friday evening at the EastSide Centre in the first round of the GLVC Championship Tournament. It was the third time this season the Flyers defeated the Greyhounds, and twice in straight sets.

Anna Fehribach surpassed 300 kills on the season with five in the contest, while Olivia Martin came close to becoming the program's leader with the most digs by a rookie, concluding the campaign with 522, just four shy of the record. Alexis Waugh ends her collegiate career with a personal-best 669 this season, while Teigan Flaws finishes her UIndy tenure with 256 kills. Kailey Kleinert will also complete her Greyhound career with 95 total blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The third-ranked Flyers got off to a hot start, winning the first set, 25-12 and attacking at a .419 rate. The Greyhounds made a push in the second frame, but eventually fell by a 25-16 score. UIndy held Lewis to .233 hitting in the third set, but the Greyhound offense couldn't get into a rhythm and bowed out in straight sets.

Katie Furlong finished the match with six kills and five digs, while Julia Kruzan had five kills. Fehribach had five successful attacks and four digs.

Flaws and Kleinert each had three kills, while Katie Voelz also chipped in three. Alyssa Spears finished with 13 assists, while Waugh dished out 11 herself. Martin recorded 19 digs in the loss and the lone service ace by the Greyhounds.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach Jason Reed
On the match
"We lost to a pretty good team tonight in Lewis, who was firing on all cylinders. We came out a little tentative and we were playing catch-up the entire match."

On the seniors
"We wish our seniors the best and are proud of how they led this season. Our record will never show what they did for us and that stinks, but I know that the future is bright for this group. We owe the start of that success to Teigan, Kailey, and Alexis for getting us started."

Senior setter Alexis Waugh
On coming back to collegiate volleyball after working in the real world
"I'm really grateful for this opportunity. Obviously it's a unique situation, and I had to kick my butt into gear and get back into shape over the summer. And get to know the girls, which is also a challenge because I'm six years older than some of them. It was so much fun, and I bet I learned more from them than they learned from me."

On having a career-best 669 assists
"It's kind of cool. I really wanted to go out on a good note. UIndy has always been a rival of mine since I'm from Indianapolis and playing at Hillsdale for three seasons. But being part of the UIndy program has been really fun, and getting to give back to the game itself is what was most important to me."

Freshman libero Olivia Martin
On contributing immediately as a freshman
"Obviously it's a huge honor because not a lot of people get that chance. But I did realize that I have to step up my game since I've never played at the collegiate level before. I tried to go out every game and play the best that I can, and in practice doing everything I could to prove to the team that I deserve to be out there with them.

On being just four digs away from tying the program record by a freshman
"That's cool. It reflects on the hard work we do in practice and the help that my teammates give me. I can't do it by myself, and I'm grateful for having the team I do."

THAT'S A WRAP
The Greyhounds finish the 2017 season with a 13-19 record and earned the eight seed in the conference tournament, the program's 18th consecutive trip to post-season play.
