Greyhounds best Dragons for first win of the season

TIFFIN, Ohio – The UIndy women's basketball team (1-4) ensured itself a happy Thanksgiving this year, earning its first win of the season with a 60-58 victory at in-region Tiffin University Wednesday afternoon. On the eve of the national holiday, senior Martha Burse led all scorers with 24 points, while senior Ashley Montanez recorded her second consecutive double-double.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a quick start, UIndy trailed the majority of the game, including facing a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter. But the Greyhounds managed a late 8-0 run that included a pair of triples from Burse to flip the scoreboard and the momentum UIndy's way.

The stretch run featured five lead changes in all, the last of which coming with 48 seconds to go. Burse, who scored 14 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter, knocked down all eight of her free throw attempts in the final minute to hold off the host Dragons (2-3).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Montanez poured in a career-high 16 points to go with 11 rebounds for her second straight double-double game.
- Burse added eight rebounds and four assists to her game-high point total.
- Senior Devin Ferguson also had four dimes while adding three steals. She has led the Hounds in assists in each of the last four games.
- Freshman Taylor Drury had seven points and four boards. She hit a clutch three with two minutes left to spark a key 5-0 mini-run.
- Coming into the game shooting just 22 percent from deep, the Hounds connected on each of its first four 3-point attempts on to way to a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter.
- Only eight Greyhounds saw the court Wednesday as injuries have shortened the UIndy bench in this early part of the season.

HOUND BYTES
Head Coach Kristin Wodrich
"The girls did a nice job coming out with some energy in the second half. We were down two possessions to start the fourth but they answered with some good stops. Ashley started in foul trouble but stayed disciplined and had another double-double. We had to make some adjustments and the girls responded really well.

"Always good to go into the holiday with a good win!'"

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds return from Thanksgiving break with another in-region road game at Cedarville University Monday, Nov. 27. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. ET.
