Women's Basketball opens up GLVC play with thriller at Parkside

SOMERS, Wis. – The Greyhound women's basketball team open GLVC play tonight, traveling to Wisconsin-Parkside. Both teams were looking to start conference play on the right foot, the Greyhounds entered league-play with a 1-5 record while the Rangers went 2-7 during their non-conference slate. But, the Rangers started their conference season off 1-0, defeating the Hounds, 76-71.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite both teams opening the game each making early three's, Parkside jumped out to a 12-3 lead, forcing an early Greyhound timeout. The Rangers kept on rolling, going on an 18-2 run before the Greyhounds scored five quick points to make the deficit after the first quarter 28-10.

The Greyhounds came out in the second quarter playing aggressive. After forcing a multitude of turnovers, getting to the foul line, and fighting for second-chance points, UIndy found themselves on a 6-0 run and cutting the Ranger lead to 13. But, a cold stretch for the Hounds at the end of the quarter saw the Rangers go into the locker room leading 44-26.

Much like the second quarter, the Hounds came out in the third firing away. At one point, the Hounds were on a 17-7 run thanks to efforts on the glass and a strong team contribution on the defensive end. The Hounds were able to trim the Rangers lead to 10 heading into the final quarter of play.

The Hounds came into the fourth with the same vengeance that they came out in the third with. After big plays on both ends, the Hounds forced a Ranger timeout with 5:25 only down two. UIndy kept grinding away at the Parkside lead, eventually taking a one-point lead with little over three minutes to go in the game. After a Parkside three with 30.7 seconds left, the Greyhounds had the ball, down one. The Rangers forced a jump ball on the inbounds, giving them possession with just under 30 seconds to go. After two made Parkside free throws, the Hounds had a chance to send the game to overtime but a last-second three was no good.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Ashley Montanez set a career-high with 23 points. Montanez came two rebounds shy of coming away with her third double-double of the year.
-Martha Burse set a career-high with six made three-pointers on the evening, while tying her career-high in points, with 31 points on the evening.
-The Hounds shot 34.8% from beyond the arc, their second-best percentage so far, this season.
-UIndy continued their domination down-low, outscoring Parkside 32-10 in the paint.

HOUND BYTES
"The girls really battled back in the second half," said head coach Kristin Wodrich. "They took our adjustments and executed down the stretch. They never gave up and were more active on the defensive end getting out to shooters. Offensively we got more paint touches and moved the ball well. We just got down too early and the clock ran out. We just have to keep trying to improve every day."
