Men's soccer wins GLVC tournament on last-minute goal

INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Indianapolis men's soccer team won the 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Sunday, as Ben Rohder's 90th-minute goal lifted them toa 1-nil victory against the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles. Held at Carroll Stadium in downtown Indianapolis, the result secures the Greyhounds' second GLVC title in the last four years.

Battling wet, overcast conditions, both teams had opportunities in the first half, but some fantastic goalkeeping by Eagles goalkeeper Adam Zehme kept the Hounds from scoring before the two teams went to the break level at 0-0.

The Hounds had more chances in the second half and continued to test Zehme in the final quarter-hour before Rohder finally broke the deadlock off an assist from Benjamin Sierra.

All told, the Hounds put 24 shots on goal in the match, including 10 on frame. Keeper Miles Palmer earned a clean sheet, saving all five of the Screaming Eagles' shots on target. USI attempted 10 total shots in the game.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach John Higgins: "Actually really pleased with our performance. I thought we passed the ball, we dominated the game for long spells and we looked much more like UIndy soccer today.

"It was a great performance, I thought we thoroughly deserved it."

"That was the goal for us at the start of the year, was to do what we've done... We've got something to give in (NCAA) tournament."

Match-winning goal-scorer Ben Rohder: "I was just waiting in the back post for it. Benjie (Sierra) did a great job picking his head up and finding me. It's just great to put that in the goal and get the win.

"We definitely put a lot of hard work in spring and summer, and it's just nice to have it pay off and win the championship."

UP NEXT
The Hounds automatically qualify for the NCAA Division II championship tournament. They will learn who and when they will play in that tournament on Monday night at 6 p.m. during the NCAA Selection Show.
