MBB Preview | Greyhounds meet top GLVC West teams Truman, Quincy on the road

OPENING TIP
After facing the top two teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division last week, UIndy travels to meet the top two squads from the West in Truman (Feb. 2) and Quincy (Feb. 4).

TUNE IN
As always, fans not making the trip west can watch Thursday's and Saturday's games on the GLVC Sports Network. Links for the Truman/Quincy GLVCSN and live stats, as well as the WICR radio broadcast, can be found above.

WHERE WE STAND
The end of the regular season is fast approaching, and the Greyhounds are well on their way to making the GLVC Championship Tournament for the eighth consecutive season. The Hounds need to do a little more to earn a bye into the quarterfinal for the fourth straight year, currently sitting in the 5-8 seed range that would result in a first-round home game Feb. 26. The top four seeds earn first round byes in the tournament, which will be held at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. Complete GLVC standings can be found on page 5 of the game notes.

Looking further, UIndy also has work to do in order to earn an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament for the eighth straight season, a feat matched only by Bellarmine among Midwest Region programs. After a rough 1-5 start in-region, the Hounds have gone 8-1, including last Saturday's 81-66 upset over 12th-ranked Southern Indiana.

ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
The Truman Bulldogs are 16-5 overall and 8-3 in-conference, sitting atop the GLVC West with Quincy. TSU is 6-2 at home in Pershing Arena this season, but lost there last Saturday in a 96-91 decision against Missouri S&T. Chris Foster is now in his third season at the helm of the Bulldog program, and has recorded 20-plus win seasons his previous two years.

As a team, Truman likes to shoot the long ball early and often, leading the GLVC in 3-pointers per game (11.8) as well as 3-point field goal percentage (44.4), which is second-best in all of NCAA Division II.

Sophomores Jake Velky and Nathan Messer do most of the long-range damage, ranking first and second, respectively, in made threes per game. Velky's 3.6 threes per have come at a GLVC-best 49.3% clip, ranking 11th in D-II.

Other individual standouts include senior Dwight Sistrunk Jr., whose 2.85 assist/turnover ratio is tops in the conference, and classmate Cory Myers, who recently surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for his career.

GREYHOUNDS VS. BULLDOGS
Relatively new members to the GLVC, Truman has only shared the court with UIndy four times. The Greyhounds have won all four meetings, including an 87-86 thriller last season in Nicoson Hall on UIndy's Senior Night.

ABOUT THE HAWKS
Quincy shares the top spot in the GLVC West, and has a solid 18-4 overall mark entering its Thursday night game against Saint Joseph's. The Hawks, led by 13th-year head man Marty Bell, are 9-2 at home this season inside Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks have the fourth-highest scoring offense in the GLVC, averaging 86.5 per game while shooting a stellar 52 percent as a team, good for sixth-best in Division II. Quincy also has the league's best 3-point defense, limiting teams to a 31.3% effort from long range. UIndy currently ranks second in the conference in made threes per game (10.4).

Senior forward Joseph Tagarelli averages 19.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, both second-best in the GLVC, and fellow senior Herm Senor II is 10th in D-II dishing 6.5 assists per game.

GREYHOUNDS VS. HAWKS
UIndy is 19-11 against Quincy dating back to 1991, and has won the last three meetings. The Hounds scorched the Hawks a season ago in Nicoson Hall, shooting over 57 percent overall in a 98-66 rout.

LAST TIME OUT
The Hounds came out of their toughest two-game stretch of the season 1-1, falling 81-75 to No. 10 Bellarmine before bouncing back with an eye-opening 81-66 victory over No. 12 Southern Indiana. Sophomore Jimmy King scored a career-high 19 in the win, as UIndy held USI to season-lows in points and field goal percentage (34.1%).

The full recaps and box scores from the Hounds' last games can be found on pages 18 and 19 of the game notes.

SHUTTING DOWN THE SCREAMING EAGLES
As mentioned above, UIndy shocked the Screaming Eagles in Saturday's upset win. USI ranks in the top seven nationally - and first in the GLVC - in both scoring offense (93.5 ppg) and scoring margin (+20), as well as 18th in all of Division II in field goal percentage (50.1%) and ninth in 3-point percentage (42.2%).

But the Hounds turned up the defensive pressure, limiting the Eagles to under 70 points for the first time all season. USI managed just eight field goals on 32 attempts in the second half as UIndy raced out to a commanding 20-point lead to the put the game away and hand the Eagles their second loss of 2016-17.

#ED3 IN THE RECORD BOOKS
Junior Eric Davidson has been a major factor in UIndy's recent 8-1 stretch, leading the Hounds with 17.7 points per game. He's also shooting nearly 56 percent (53-95) overall and over 54 percent (32-59) from beyond the arc.

In last Thursday's game against Bellarmine, the 6-1 junior moved into the UIndy top ten in career 3-pointers, sinking his 136th in the first half. After the weekend, he sits eighth all-time with 140 made threes.

At this point in the season, Davidson is first in the GLVC in free throw percentage and third in 3-point percentage (eighth and 27th in Division II, respectively), and ninth in overall field goal percentage, based on NCAA minimums.

FIT FOR A KING
Sophomore Jimmy King is on an offensive tear over the past six games, shooting 62 percent (29-47) from the field and a remarkable 87 percent (13-15) from long range.

The Indianapolis native has set a new career high in points twice during that stretch, and is averaging 4.8 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. He's also recorded an efficient 3.2 assist/turnover ratio.

BOMBS AWAY
This Greyhound squad shattered the single-game team record for 3-pointers a few weeks ago, draining 20 against Missouri S&T to pass the previous record of 18, first set back in 2008 (and matched earlier this season at Nova Southeastern). Davidson shouldered a lot of that load with eight, but six others contributed at least one triple. Redshirt-junior Alex Etherington tied his personal best with four 3-pointers.

Not only did the Hounds break the record, but they did it in 34 attempts, finishing with a ridiculous 58.8% clip.

UIndy is currently second in the GLVC and 16th nationally averaging 10.4 made 3-pointers per game, and is also fifth in the league and 28th in D-II with a 40.6% shooting clip from deep.

GOOD CLEAN LIVING
This Greyhounds have the fewest total turnovers and lowest turnovers per game (11.9) among all conference teams this season, and rank third with a +2.1 turnover margin. UIndy has finished with fewer TOs than its opposition in each of the last 13 contests.
