INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy women's tennis team faced little resistance in their season-opening win Saturday afternoon, sweeping past Division I IUPUI 9-0 inside the UIndy Tennis Center.
The Greyhounds (1-0) defeated the crosstown Jaguars (0-6) for the second consecutive season, and won all but one set in the thorough performance.
Playing by NCAA Division II rules, UIndy jumped out to an advantageous 3-0 lead after claiming all three doubles matches.
First in was No. 3 doubles, where the sister tandem of Dana and
Paige Olsen cruised past IUPUI's Molly Nguyen and Marina Schneiger, 8-1.
Hanna Volikova and
Florence Renard, the 11th-ranked duo in DII, defeated Valeriia Lavrenchuk and Samantha Meyer, 8-4.
UIndy's veteran pair of
Stephanie Hirsch and
Selenay Heper completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 decision over the Jags' Mariella Pessina and Sara Sherif on court two.
Although they needed just three more points, the Hounds went on to win all six singles matches, five of which came in straight sets.
Volikova, ranked No. 3 in all of Division II, handled IUPUI's Lavrenchuk 6-0, 6-1 in the top singles slot, improving to 12-1 in all singles matches in 2016-17.
Heper sealed UIndy's overall victory with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Schneiger in No. 5 singles, earning the all-important fifth point.
At No. 3, Renard defeated Mayer 6-2, 6-4, moving to 6-1 in all singles matches this season.
Continuing to battle back from an injury that sidelined her a season ago, the 2015 GLVC Player of the Year, Hirsch, needed three sets to drop Sherif, 6-3, 1-6, 10-7.
Two UIndy newcomers closed out the victory, as freshman
Chloe Weihs won her first collegiate dual match 6-3, 6-2 over Pessina in No. 4, and junior-transfer
Mara Hofstetter dropped Nguyen 7-6(2), 6-4 in No. 6.
The Hounds welcome another D-I opponent to the UIndy Tennis Center Sunday, meeting Illinois State at 1 p.m. ET.
