EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Just one night after their scintillating quarterfinal upset over Southern Indiana, the UIndy women's basketball team struggled to find any rhythm in a 69-50 loss to the Lewis University Flyers in Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament semifinal.
UIndy closes the books on its 2016-17 campaign with a 17-14 overall record. Lewis moves to 23-7 and will meet the top-seeded Drury Panthers in Sunday's GLVC Championship.
The Hounds' stellar offensive run through the first and quarterfinal rounds was stifled by the Flyers, who held UIndy to just 34 percent (21-62) from the floor and 6 of 18 from beyond the perimeter.
Leaning heavily on GLVC Player of the Year Jessica Kelliher – who finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds – the Flyers managed 34 points in the paint and 44 rebounds to UIndy's 27. As a team, Lewis assisted on 23 of 26 field goals, and shot nearly 62 percent (24-39) after the first quarter.
Both sides were sluggish at the start of Saturday's semifinal, as turnovers and cold shooting resulted in a low-scoring opening period. The two teams combined to go just 4-for-32 (12.5%) overall, as the Flyers managed an 8-7 edge at the end of the first.
Lewis eventually warmed up in the second quarter, however, and put together two separate 9-0 runs, the latter of which gave the Flyers a 30-20 halftime lead.
UIndy shot just under 27 percent (8-30) in the first 20 minutes, while connecting on only 2 of 10 from beyond the perimeter. The Hounds were also out-rebounded 26 to 14, and finished with 14 fewer points in the paint than the Flyers.
The third-seeded Flyers continued to increase their lead in the third quarter, and used a late 10-0 run to push their lead up to a game-high 52-30.
Despite the 22-point deficit, the Hounds continued to battle.
A 13-0 stretch to start the fourth quarter brought UIndy all the way back within nine points at 52-43, but the Flyers answered with a 13-2 stretch of their own to halt any comeback bid.
Junior
Martha Burse led the Hounds with 11 points and five assists, adding four boards and a pair of assists. Classmate
Sydney Brackemyre paced UIndy with nine rebounds to go along with eight points.
Senior
Nicole Anderson finished her remarkable Greyhound career with seven points, three rebounds and three assists, having to battle with foul trouble. The forward from Terre Haute, Ind., sits 17th on the program's career scoring list with 1,141 points.
Also wrapping up her UIndy career Saturday was
Emily Thomas, who sank her only attempt in the Hounds' loss.
After taking her squad to the program's first GLVC semifinal since 2012, first-year Head Coach
Kristin Drabyn finishes her inaugural season with a 17-14 overall record, a definite turnaround from last year's 10-20 mark.
