ST. LOUIS – For the fifth season in a row the UIndy women's tennis team is heading to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament semifinals, defeating Maryville 5-0 in Friday's quarterfinal match at Vetta Sports - Concord.
Amid the win, sophomore standout and 2017 GLVC Player of the Year
Hanna Volikova set the program's single-season record with her 26th singles victory, surpassing the previous mark of 25 accomplished first by Laura Phillipp in 2004-05 and later matched by
Stephanie Hirsch in 2014-15.
Volikova's win came after No. 13 UIndy (15-3) swept all three doubles matches to take a commanding 3-0 advantage against Maryville (14-10).
She partnered with junior
Florence Renard at No. 1 doubles to defeat the Saints' Puck Vlaskamp and Rebekah Anderson, 8-4, for the Hounds' first point.
UIndy's senior duo of Hirsch and
Selenay Heper followed with an 8-4 win of their own against Lina Kunert and Sandra Hinterberger.
At No. 3, junior
Mara Hofstetter and freshman
Bella Bergman earned an 8-6 victory over Maryville's Lucy Horbatowski and Sarah Etter.
Volikova began singles action with her historic win at No. 1 singles, a 6-1, 6-0 decision against All-GLVC selection Etter. She improved to 26-4 in singles matches this season, and put the Hounds one point from overall victory over Maryville.
With singles Nos. 2, 3 and 4 all up one set, it was Renard at No. 2 who ultimately finished first to move the Hounds into the semifinals. She defeated Vlaskamp 6-1, 6-2, moving to 19-5 overall and 13-4 this spring.
The Greyhounds advance to face the winner of Rockhurst and Lewis on the outdoor courts at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center Sunday at 10 a.m. ET.
