Women's tennis captures GLVC championship in dramatic 5-4 win against Drury

ST. LOUIS – UIndy women's tennis won the program's 10th Great Lakes Valley Conference championship Monday, defeating Drury 5-4 in a thrilling match at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center.

The No. 13 Greyhounds (17-3) and No. 14 Panthers (20-3) entered the weekend the highest-ranked teams in both the GLVC and Midwest Region, and had a recent history at the conference tournament.

The teams met two seasons ago in the title bout, which the Hounds won 5-2. Drury had the final say last year, dropping UIndy 5-3 in the semifinals.

But Monday belonged to the Hounds, who once again overcame a 2-1 deficit following doubles action.

As expected, the vital doubles advantage was hotly contested.

After suffering a loss in Sunday's semifinal, the No. 1 doubles team of junior Florence Renard and sophomore GLVC Player of the Year Hanna Volikova bounced back with an 8-3 decision against Drury's Larissa Karl and Julia Schepp. It was a battle between ranked opponents, as the Panther duo entered the tournament ranked eighth in Division II with the Greyhounds 22nd.

Drury got on the board after its No. 2 doubles team rallied from an early deficit to claim an 8-6 win.

Despite coming from behind to force a tiebreak, UIndy's No. 3 team of junior Mara Hofstetter and freshman Bella Bergman fell to the Panthers' regionally-ranked Ruby Huang and Josephine Jedrychowski, 9-7.

Senior Selenay Heper was the first Greyhound to finish singles, defeating Elizaveta Tregubova 6-3, 6-4 to level the match at 2-2.

Volikova followed, defeating Karl in a nationally-ranked showdown at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2, making it 3-2.

Her doubles partner Renard finished just minutes later, topping Drury's Lara Muller 6-4, 6-1 to put UIndy a point away from victory.

Drury had won the first set on the rest of the singles courts, however, and eventually claimed Nos. 4 and 5 to make it 4-4.

All eyes fell on senior Stephanie Hirsch, who had rallied from a 6-0 first-set loss against Chung-Ten Huang to win the second, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. The two went back and forth in the final set, splitting the first eight games, 4-4.

Eventually, the Greyhound senior outlasted the Drury rookie, winning the final two games and clinching the championship.

By virtue of UIndy's championship, Malik Tabet earns GLVC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year honors for the second time in his tenure (2015).

The Hounds' 10th GLVC crown gives them three more than any other program in the conference, and solidifies their spot atop the Midwest in the NCAA Regional Rankings.

UIndy now awaits the NCAA Tournament, and will learn its draw Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET during the selection show. Fans can tune in here.
