Hounds celebrate senior day with win over Parkside

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy men's basketball team (18-8, 12-6 GLVC) capped off its regular season with an 82-73 senior day win over Wisconsin-Parkside (9-19, 7-11 GLVC). Five players scored in double figures for the Hounds, including seniors Eric Davidson (13) and Ajay Lawton (10).

Alex Etherington (12), Jabree Bond-Flournoy (9), and Devin Dixon (6) combined for 27 of the team's 30 bench points, while Etherington sealed the victory with a dunk at the 1:40 mark of the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The visiting Rangers shot 50 percent from the field in the first half to lead by five at the break. The Parkside lead grew to seven with 11 minutes left, before CJ Hardaway Jr. and Trevor Lakes scored the next seven points to knot the game at 19. Etherington knocked down a jumper after the under-four media timeout, but Parkside finished the half on a 10-3 run to carry the five-point advantage after 20 minutes.

Etherington and Jesse Kempson each scored 10 points in the second half to lead the Hounds' comeback. Davidson drilled his only triple seven-and-a-half minutes into the second half to give UIndy a 52-50 lead. Kempson scored six straight points in a span of 90 seconds to stretch the advantage to eight with 3:36 remaining, and Etherington slammed it home just minutes later for the 10-point cushion. Parkside hit a pair of layups with under 30 seconds left, but Bond-Flournoy and Tate Hall each knocked down two free throws to give the Hounds their eventual nine-point win. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Jabree Bond-Flournoy scored a near career-high, and season-best, with nine points. It was the most for the senior since his sophomore campaign when he poured in 10 against Governors State. The Decatur, Ill. native was perfect from the field (three for three), and grabbed two boards and had one steal.

CJ Hardaway Jr. led the team in scoring for just the second time this season with his 15 spot, with the other instance coming in the loss to Barry before Christmas break. The junior was seven of 11 from the field, while dishing out three assists, securing two rebounds, and recording two steals and one block.

Tate Hall only scored four points in the win, but contributed in other factors against the Rangers. The sophomore had a game-high eight rebounds, while also having a game-best four assists. Hall was four for four from the charity stripe.

UIndy got back in the win column on senior day after the team took a loss in last season's home finale. The Greyhounds have now won three of their past four games while celebrating their seniors.

Eric Davidson and Bond-Flournoy combined to go 44-8 at Nicoson Hall in their four years as Greyhounds.

HOUND BYTES
Jabree Bond-Flournoy on coming into senior day
"I just wanted to come in with pure confidence. Today was an emotional day for me. I wanted to go out the right way in Nicoson Hall, and [that shot] gave me the confidence to go out and win it for my team."

On what it means to end his career in Nicoson Hall
"I wouldn't want to go out with any other guys. We started from scratch since freshman year and worked all the way up. It's been a fun ride; we've had so many memories on and off the court. I have such a strong relationship with them. No matter what we go through in life, we'll always be there for each other."

Head coach Stan Gouard on second-half adjustments
"We knew we were playing flat. We talked about it at halftime; we weren't playing our brand of basketball. On the defensive end, we were relaxed, and I was looking for a sparkplug and that's when I called on Jabree. [Let's] talk about a guy ready to go. It came down to crunch time and I have a great deal of confidence in him. He's a guy that knows our system and I wanted to have him in the basketball game and I knew he would do the right things for us tonight."

On subbing out the seniors
"I have to smile to keep from crying. Watching these guys grow up in front of my eyes, it's a blessing in disguise, especially when you have guys with the character like Jabree and Eric. Those two guys have been here four years, and I was proud to help those guys grow as young men. These two guys already have jobs lined up, and that just says a lot about their determination. Both of these guys are true student-athletes and we're proud to have these guys on our team representing our program."

On next week's GLVC Championship Tournament
"If you're not ready to go next week, you don't deserve a UIndy jersey. It's tournament time; we start a new season. I told our guys were 0-0, no wins, no losses. We get to start fresh, and we'll come out Monday with a new attitude in preparation for a good run in [Edwardsville, Ill.]. I don't want to go in there and win just one game; I want to win three. We'll take it one game at a time."

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds await their opponent for the first round of the GLVC tournament next weekend in Edwardsville, Ill. UIndy came into senior day in fourth place, but just a fraction of a percentage point behind Drury and Truman, which were tied for second.

Truman was victorious over Illinois-Springfield on Saturday afternoon, whole Drury lost by a point to William Jewell.

The final regular season standings will be posted later tonight as a matchup between Maryville and Missouri-St. Louis tips off at 7:30 p.m. CT.
