Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The No. 29 UIndy women's tennis team defeated Maryville in the first round of the GLVC Championship Tournament on Friday afternoon at Cooper Tennis Complex. The Hounds, seeded as the East Division's second seed, won 5-1 over the West's third seed.
Second-ranked duo Hanna Volikova and Alina Kislitskaya handled business to begin the day's proceedings, beating their No. 1 doubles counterparts, 8-2. The No. 2 slot proved to be closer than the top spot, but Florence Renard and Chloe Weihs edged out Maryville's tandem, 8-6.
UIndy nearly pulled off the sweep in doubles, but Dana Olsen and Paige Olsen dropped a 9-7 decision at No. 3.
Volikova, ranked sixth in the country as a singles player, won her No. 1 bout (6-4, 6-2), while Kislitskaya continued her hot rookie campaign with a victory at No. 2 (6-1, 6-3).
Weihs clinched the first-round win at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win.
The women's win makes UIndy 2-0 on the day, as the men advanced to the conference semifinals earlier in the day. The Hounds will compete at 1 p.m. local time tomorrow afternoon to earn the right to defend their GLVC title.
