On tap: UIndy eyes its third straight win when Tiffin heads to Key Stadium for homecoming Saturday night. The Dragons are winless on the season in their second campaign as full members of the GLIAC.
Series history: Indianapolis has won the only meeting between the teams, a 54-12 trouncing at Tiffin last season. In that game, Craig Ray picked-off a pair of passes and gathered 112 return yards, including a score, for the Greyhounds. Mike Dum had eight tackles, 2.0 for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in the win.
About Tiffin: The Dragons have found life in the GLIAC a tough one. TU has just one conference win in its first 17 league games after going 9-2 in 2007 and 10-1 in 2006. The Dragons rank second to last in scoring offense and are 12th in total defense coming into the week.
About TU Head Coach David Walkosky: David Walkosky is in his second year at the helm of the Tiffin program. He is 1-18 in his tenure there. Previously, he served assistant coaching stints at Toledo, Tennessee-Martin, Memphis and Waynesburg (Pa.)
About UIndy Head Coach Joe Polizzi: Polizzi, now in his 16th season, is 83-87-1 in his tenure at UIndy. Polizzi has collected eight winning seasons in that time, including three of the last four.
Regional Rankings: The latest NCAA Super Regional 3 rankings show five GLIAC schools in the top five. UIndy has the distinction of playing four of those teams. The conference schools are: Saginaw Valley State (3), Hillsdale (5), Grand Valley State (7), Wayne State (8) and Findlay (9). Minnesota State, Mankato continues to top the rankings with the lone undefeated mark (8-0) in the region.
National Rankings: Several Greyhounds continue to appear in the national rankings through eight weeks. Ryan Forney is the third-leading punt returner in D-II, averaging 18.5 yards per return to also lead the conference. Rob Doyle is 51st in passing efficiency (134.26), Mike Dum is tied for 66th in total tackles per game (8.57) and Craig Ray is tied for 83rd in that category (8.12).
Never Bur-ford: Junior tight end caught his first two touchdowns of his career last Saturday in the win over Michigan Tech. The converted defensive lineman has now caught 18 passes for 147 yards this season.
J.T. Earns P.O.W.: Senior defensive back J.T. Owens was named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in the win vs. Michigan Tech. Owens grabbed interceptions on back-to-back possessions to start the second half. The first was deep in Greyhound territory with MTU driving. The second came when Owens victimized the Huskies again, this time returning it 42 yards for a touchdown to effectively put the game away for Indianapolis. He totaled four tackles in the win and added a sack becoming the first Greyhound to win weekly honors this season.
Take It Away, Take It Away, Take It Away, Now: The UIndy defense made a habit of forcing Michigan Tech into turnovers last week, collecting five possession-changers in the win. Three interceptions and two more fumble recoveries helped UIndy mount a cushy 38-6 lead late in the third quarter. It marked the most takeaways in a game for Indianapolis since the 2005 season when the Hounds forced Wayne State into six turnovers.
Homecoming Happiness: The Greyhounds have a three-game homecoming streak intact, thanks to some heroic comebacks in each of the past two years. In 2007, Casey Gillin threw for 402 yards to help erase a 16-point fourth-quarter lead for Hillsdale en route to a 34-30 win. Last season, Craig Jenkins rolled-up 251 yards rushing as the Greyhounds overcame a 17-point margin in the final quarter for a 23-20 win over Northwood.
Thanks for the Memories: UIndy will honor its senior class Saturday with a pre-game ceremony for the student-athletes in the final home game of their careers.
