Five gridders earn All-GLIAC honors

Complete 2009 All-GLIAC selections (.pdf)

BAY CITY, Mich.-  Five Greyhounds earned All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors, including four from the conference's top-ranked defense, announced by league officials Wednesday.  Senior Tim Dury (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard), senior Randall Courtney (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and junior Craig Ray (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield)l were all first team honorees while J.T. Owens (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North/Indiana) and Mike Dum (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) were named to the second team.  Six Hounds also earned honorable mention accolades.

Dury, who was named a Preseason All-America candidate, anchored the UIndy offensive line, starting every game at center.  The senior co-captain battled through injuries in his final collegiate campaign and was the solid fixture in a line that was dessimated due to injury.  The Bishop Chatard graduate was a second team honoree last season.

Courtney picked-up his third All-GLIAC honor, the first time being named to the top squad.  Courtney finished the season leading the team in tackles for loss (11.0) and sacks (5.5).  For his career, Courtney amassed 29.5 tackles for loss, seventh-most in school history.  His career sack total (13.0) also ranks among the leaders (T13th).  The Indianapolis, Ind. native was an All-GLIAC Second Team member in each of the past two seasons.

Ray polished-off a solid junior season with 81 tackles, second-most on the team.  The safety from Plainfield, Ind. solidifed a stingy defense that allowed the fewest passing yards and total yards per game in the GLIAC.  He was a second-team pick last year.

Owens led the team in interceptions (3) and added 56 total tackles.  He victimized Michigan Tech twice, including a pick for a touchdown en route to winning the league's Defensive Player of the Week award on Oct. 17.

Dum was the Greyhound tackle leader for the second straight season.  The sophomore registered 85 total stops in 10 games, giving him 183 in his two seasons in a UIndy jersey.  Last season, he was the first freshman in the school's history to lead the team in tackles and was an honorable mention selection.

Six Greyhounds were given honorable mention status: Ryan Forney (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point), Stephen Geller (Avon, Ind./Avon), Joe Leach (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee), Josh Martin (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard), Adam Prichard (Dayton, Ohio/Northmont) and Eric Quintana (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth).

Wayne State running back Joique Bell was named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year, Grand Valley State quarterback Brad Iciek was Offensive Back of the Year, Saginaw Valley State linebacker John Jacobs was the Defensive Back of the Year, Nick McDonald of GVSU was the Offensive Lineman of the Year and Laker Danny Ricahrd was the Defensive Lineman of the Year.  The  Freshman of the Year went to Monterae Williams while Coach of the Year accolades were bestowed on Hillsdale's Keith Otterbein.
