On tap: Fresh off moving up a spot in the coaches' poll, the second-ranked UIndy women's basketball team defends its spotless record in a pair of conference road games this week. UIndy travels to nearby Saint Joseph's Thursday evening before heading to Kenosha, Wis. to face GLVC North-leading Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday afternoon.
About Saint Joseph's: Though they come into Thursday's game with just five wins to their credit, the Pumas have won two of the last three with wins coming over the two newest GLVC schools: Illinois-Springfield and Maryville. SJC sits at or near the bottom of the conference in most statistical categories, including allowing a league-high 77.3 points per game. However, the Pumas rank second in the GLVC in both steals per game (11.1) and turnover margin (+5.2).
A transfer from D-I Saint Louis University, sophomore Tatiana Ortiz scores 15.7 points per contest, good for sixth in the league. Indianapolis native and Cardinal Ritter grad Erica Jiles averages a team-high 4.8 rebounds per in conference play.
Hounds vs. Pumas: UIndy holds a commanding 37-22 advantage in the all-time series, with the Hounds taking six straight and 19 of the previous 20. The Pumas' lone win over that span came in Rensselaer on 2/21/06 when the home team escaped with an 83-75 overtime win. This year's seniors have never lost to Saint Joseph's.
Last season, the Hounds swept a pair of games versus SJC by an average of 26 points.
Samantha Meissel averaged 23.5 ppg in the two wins while shooting 20-for-24 from the floor, including a perfect 10-for-10 effort in the Hounds'
85-46 blowout win at Nicoson Hall Jan. 31.
Thursday marks the only meeting between Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's this year, marking the first time in 27 seasons that UIndy will play its closest GLVC neighbor just once. The reason for the change stems from Saint Joseph's moving to the newly former GLVC North Division this year while the Hounds remain in the East.
About Wisconsin-Parkside: The Rangers, who received votes in this week's D-II coaches poll, come into the week sporting a 17-3 overall record and 9-2 GLVC mark, including a perfect 10-0 record at DeSimone Gymnasium. UW-Parkside ranks second in all of D-II in both team field goal percentage (.501) and team 3-point field goal percentage (.421).
Four Rangers average in double figures, led by sophomore Brittany Beyer's 16.7 ppg. Reigning GLVC Player of the Week Brittany Hogen (14.3 ppg, 8.7 rpg) notched three double-doubles last week, while sophomore Jadee Rooney (13.4 ppg, 3.8 apg) ranks 10th in the nation in 3-point accuracy (.455).
Hounds vs. Rangers: Parkside has won 15 consecutive games on its home floor dating back to last year. However, the Rangers last loss at home came at the hands of the Greyhounds on Jan. 29, 2009. UIndy's frontcourt trio of Sam Meissel,
Sarah Fenneman and
Katie Lyons combined for 37 points on 13-of-19 (.684) shooting in the
73-58 UIndy win.
Overall, the Hounds have taken 19 of 29 meetings with the Rangers, including eight of the last nine.
Head Coach LeAnn Freeland: In her third season at the helm, UIndy women's basketball head coach
LeAnn Freeland enters play this week sporting a 65-18 career record, good for a .783 winning percentage - highest in program history. Freeland has guided UIndy to back-to-back NCAA berths, including its first-ever NCAA Sweet 16 appearance last year. In one of the tourney's toughest regions, the Greyhounds took down a pair of top-10 teams at the 2009 Big Dance (No. 3 Hillsdale & No. 9 Quincy) before falling 69-52 to 22nd-ranked Michigan Tech in the Midwest Regional final.
Last Time Out: In its 19th win in as many games this season, UIndy earned a convincing
82-52 home decision versus Kentucky Wesleyan last Saturday. The Greyhounds led wire-to-wire as the visiting Panthers shot just 29 percent from the floor. Meissel led all scorers with 18 points while
Katie Dewey chipped-in 16.
Goin' Streakin': The Greyhounds continue to rack up wins this year as they head into play this week with a spotless 19-0 record. The Hounds' 19-game win streak not only represents a new program record for wins to start a season (11, 2007-08), but it also recently surpassed the school's overall consecutive wins mark (17, 2002-03).
Percentage Points: The Greyhounds' field goal percentage has steadily climbed in recent weeks, as the team has sank at least 50 percent of its shot attempts in seven of the last eight games. UIndy's team percentage now sits at .491, good for fifth in Division II. However, the Hounds are only the third-best shooting team in the GLVC, as Saturday's opponent Wisconsin-Parkside ranks second in D-II with a .501 percentage and GLVC West-leading Drury tops the nation at .511.
...And Then There Were Four: The Greyhounds are one of only four undefeated teams left in Division II. The number was six heading into last weekend until a pair of teams fell from the ranks of the unbeatens Saturday. Then-eighth-ranked Carson-Newman dropped a 78-67 decision at home to unranked Lenoir-Rhyne, and No. 9 Arkansas Tech edged visiting and second-ranked Delta State 56-47.
The list of undefeated teams is now limited to No. 1 Franklin-Pierce (17-0), second-ranked UIndy (19-0), No. 3 Gannon (20-0) and seventh-ranked Arkansas Tech (18-0).
Climbing the Charts: Indianapolis is ranked second in the most recent USA TODAY ESPN Division II Coaches' Poll, its highest ranking since the poll began in 1996-97. The Hounds, who received a pair of first-place votes, have moved steadily up the rankings this season, rising from 11th in the preseason to No. 2 this week. The Greyhounds' previous high in the poll before this season was seventh back on Mar. 12, 2003 just after winning their most recent GLVC championship. Below is a break down of the Hounds' week-by-week position in the coaches' poll this year.
