INDIANAPOLIS- Down 33-20 after three quarters, the UIndy football team (5-4, 4-4 GLIAC) came all the way back to earn a thrilling 37-33 win against visiting Ferris State Saturday night. Junior
Paul Corsaro scored the game-winning touchdown with just 48 ticks left, going in untouched from two yards out.
After trailing 20-6 in the first half, the Bulldogs (5-4, 5-3) ran off 27 unanswered points to take a double-digit lead deep into the fourth quarter.
With 12:46 remaining, the Hounds began the long road back when sophomore
Aaron Puntarelli made good on his first field goal attempt in three weeks, connecting from 38 yards out to make it 33-23 Bulldogs.
Ferris State followed with an impressive drive that quite possibly could have put the game away, but the turnover bug bit the Bulldogs for the fifth time on the night. The FSU offense used 12 plays to eat up 5:19 and 60 yards before coughing up their seventh fumble of the game at the UIndy 13 yard line.
All five of the Bulldogs' turnovers came on fumbles, with the final one recovered by UIndy linebacker
John Dury.
With seven minutes now showing on the clock, the Hounds still had 10 points to make up, but the offense delivered a much-needed quick strike with a 97-second drive, ending in a
Ryan Forney touchdown catch.
Forney had a big 68-yard reception earlier in the series, good for his team-leading sixth play of 30 yards or more.
The Greyhound defense again came up big, forcing a three-and-out to give the ball back to the offense with 2:59 remaining.
Trailing by just three, the drive started with a diving catch by Mar'Quone Edmonds that went for 23 yards. Later, freshman quarterback
Chris Mills found
Brenden Williams for a 16-yard gain to position the team in the red zone.
Facing a 3rd and 4, the Hounds weren't satisfied with a potential game-tying field goal, as Mills found Forney near the sidelines for an eight-yard gain to make it 1st and goal and set up Corsaro's game-winning rush.
Despite throwing a collegiate-high three interceptions, Mills threw for 329 yards on 23-for-37 passing.
Klay Fiechter led the team in rushing with 81 yards on the ground, and both Forney and Williams finished with over 100 yards receiving.
Defensively,
Tyler Peterman led the way with 11 tackles, including two for a total loss of 16 yards.
Vince Maida recovered three FSU fumbles, while
Mike Phillips had a big sack on the game's final drive.
