BAY CITY, Mich.- Sophomore quarterback
Chris Mills was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference “Offensive Back of the Year” by the league coaches Wednesday. The Lafayette, Ind., native was one of eight UIndy football players to receive All-GLIAC honors, a total that includes five first-team nods.
Mills, who paced the GLIAC in passing yards with 2,980, set new single-season school records for TD passes (29), completions (243) and completion percentage (63.8), while throwing just five interceptions in close to 400 attempts. He notched seven games with at least three touchdown passes and recorded a career-high 415 yards through the air in a win versus Northern Michigan Oct. 22.
A former state champion at Lafayette Central Catholic High School, Mills is the second Greyhound in as many years to garner a GLIAC positional award, as All-American safety
Craig Ray was named the conference's “Defensive Back of the Year” last season. In addition, Mills is the first Hound to be dubbed the league's top offensive back since quarterback Matt Kohn back in 2003.
Joining Mills on the offensive first team were wide receivers Mar'Quone Edmonds and
Ryan Forney. The duo combined for a gaudy 156 receptions for 2,096 yards and 25 touchdowns. Edmonds' 14 TD catches set a new single-season school record, while Forney's 80 receptions and 1,131 receiving yards were both good for second in UIndy's single-season annals.
Forney, who led the league in punt return average (13.2 yds per) and broke the program mark for all-purpose yards in a season (1,713), was also named to the first team as special teamer.
Linebacker
Mike Dum also garnered first-team recognition. The Bishop Chatard grad tied for sixth in the league with 96 tackles to finish with a career total of 342, good for 10th all-time at UIndy. His first-team laurels supplement a second-team honor in 2009 and all-conference honorable mention accolades in '10 and '08 to make him just the fifth-ever Greyhound to receive four all-conference awards.
UIndy's five first-team nods set a new program record for most All-GLIAC First Teamers in a season.
This fall marked the final year for the Hounds in the GLIAC, as the team will join the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) starting in 2012.
Making the second team cut was sophomore running back
Klay Fiechter, junior offensive lineman
Joe Britner, junior linebacker
Max Davis and senior defensive back
Nate Jackson. Both Britner (honorable mention) and Davis (second team) were all-conference performers last year, while Fiechter and Jackson are both first-time honorees.
Collin Coffer (Sr./DB),
Jovone Jordan (Jr./DL),
Andrew Mansaray, (Jr./OL),
Hunter Mason (So./OL) and
Demetreius Wilson (Sr./DL) all received honorable mention.
As a team, the Greyhounds capped a successful 2011 season with a 7-4 record, their first seven-win campaign since 2001. A regular in this year's NCAA Division II Super Region #3 Poll, the Hounds topped the GLIAC in passing offense (284.5 ypg) and ranked third in total defense (343.5 ypg), while also setting a new D-II mark in fewest turnovers in a season (6).
