INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy baseball team (18-8, 9-7 GLVC) endured a trying day at Greyhound Park Saturday, dropping both games of a doubleheader to Wisconsin-Parkside, 12-0 and 18-10.
After sweeping then-GLVC-East-leading Saint Joseph's
Wednesday, the Greyhounds surrendered a total of 30 runs to the sub-.500 Rangers (8-15, 7-7). It marked the most runs allowed by UIndy in a doubleheader since giving up 30 to Southern Arkansas in 2007, and most in a conference twin bill since Bellarmine hung 32 on the Hounds back in 1996.
GAME ONE |
box score
UIndy suffered from a lack of timely hitting in the opener, as the Greyhounds stranded 12 runners in the abbreviated seven-inning game. Half that total came when UIndy left the bases loaded in both the third and fourth frames.
Redshirt-sophomore
Scott Lawley (pictured) was the only Greyhound with more than one hit, as he finished 2-for-2 with two singles and was hit twice by pitched balls.
Starting pitcher
Cory Rupert (4-3) took the loss for the Hounds. The Southport, Ind., native looked solid in the first inning, but UWP tagged him for four runs in the second and three in the third. Rupert gave up eight singles in the aforementioned innings – all singles. He lasted just 2 2/3 innings, his shortest non-relief outing in his last 17 starts dating back to last season.
The game was scheduled to go nine innings before the 10-run rule was instituted after seven.
The loss snapped the Hounds' 14-game win streak against UWP.
GAME TWO |
box score
The Greyhound bats proved more effective in the second game, as the Hounds out-hit the Rangers 16 to 14.
UIndy again fell behind early when Parkside took a 5-0 lead after two-and-a-half innings, but the Hounds surged with two runs in the third and four in the fourth to take their first lead of the day. The latter frame featured a two-run double from then-DH
Chris Saroff.
The lead was shorted lived however, as the Rangers exploded for 13 combined runs in the fifth and sixth to all but ensure the sweep. The Greyhounds strung together five straight hits in the seventh inning, including a pinch-hit homer from
Nate Koontz, but the rally proved too little, too late.
UIndy needed five pitchers to get through seven innings, with senior reliever
Andy Betts (0-2) taking the loss. Lawley,
Kyler Mason and
Alex Kiel all had three hits.
The Greyhounds hope to fare better in Sunday's doubleheader versus the Rangers. First pitch from Greyhound Park tomorrow is scheduled for noon.
Note: Saturday's games were delayed two hours by rain showers.
