HOUGHTON, Mich.- The UIndy football team (2-2, 1-2 GLAIC) dropped a 28-16 decision at Michigan Tech (3-1, 2-1) Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds managed season lows in both points and total yards against the GLIAC's top-ranked defense.
Fresh off a big win versus Grand Valley State last week, UIndy struggled to move the ball against the staunch Michigan Tech defense. The Greyhounds managed just 16 points and 244 total yards after coming into the day averaging 37 and 440 in the two categories, respectively.
Meanwhile, the Huskies, ranked 22nd in the latest D2Football.com poll, dominated the time of possession by holding the ball for more than 37 minutes. They out-gained the Hounds 127 rushing yards to 18, while freshman quarterback Tyler Scarlett was an efficient 16-for-19 in pass attempts.
Down 7-0 early in the second quarter, UIndy got on the board with a one-yard touchdown pass from
Chris Mills to
Ryan Forney. The Greyhounds took advantage of two pass interference calls in the red zone, both coming on third down.
The Huskies answered with touchdowns on each of their next two possessions to eventually take a 21-10 lead into halftime. The drives sandwiched a UIndy field goal, as freshman
Scott Miller connected from 41 yards out on the game's only FG attempt.
The teams traded punts to start the second half until Tech strung together a pivotal 15-play, 92-yard drive to up the margin to 18. The series ate up more than half the third quarter, leaving the Greyhounds down three scores with just 16 minutes to go.
The tension thickened on the Hounds' ensuing possession, as Mills succumbed to injury for the second straight game. The play garnered a roughing the passer penalty for the Huskies, but, unlike last week, Mills would not return.
The Greyhounds' come-back hopes fell to senior QB
Rob Doyle. The Bishop Chatard grad, who played well in Mills' brief absence last Saturday, racked up 101 passing yards in the final quarter, including a 21-yard touchdown to Mar'Quone Edmonds. However, he also endured four sacks for a total loss of 32 yards.
The scoring strike to Edmonds pulled UIndy within 12 points with 9:39 left in the game, but after the two-point conversion failed, neither team would score again, ensuring the Greyhounds' second loss of the season.
The team looks to bounce back next week with a home match-up versus the University of Findlay Oct. 1. Kickoff from Key Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Notes: Forney had his second consecutive 100-yard receiving game, thanks to a game-high 103 receiving yards…Edmonds now sits at 16 career TD catches, good for six in the all-time school annals…Senior safety Nate Jackson amassed a career-high 11 tackles…The Hounds have not committed a turnover in 25 consecutive quarters dating back to last year. They are the only team in Division II without a turnover this season.
