INDIANAPOLIS - Winners of seven straight, the UIndy football team (7-2, 7-0 GLVC) remained unbeaten in Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 48-3 win against visiting William Jewell
Saturday night. With a one game lead in the GLVC standings and just one conference game left, the Greyhounds are assured at least a share of the first-ever GLVC football championship.
As is the case seemingly every week this season, a number of UIndy records fell in the blowout win.
Mar'quone Edmonds became the school's all-time leader in career receiving yards, while
Klay Fiechter broke single-season records for both rushing touchdowns and overall touchdowns.
With the Cardinals (2-7, 1-5) stacking the box most of the night, UIndy was able to rack-up 318 yards through the air. Junior quarterback
Chris Mills finished 16-for-21 with four touchdown passes before being taken out after three quarters. Mills has thrown four TDs in each of the last four games.
Defensively, the Greyhounds nearly had their second shutout of the season. Jewell was limited to 155 total yards on the night. Its third-quarter field goal was actually deflected at the line but somehow still managed to go through the uprights.
After a defensive stop to open the game, the Greyhounds got on the board quickly with a four-play scoring drive, culminating in a 25-yard touchdown reception by senior
Brenden Williams. The score was setup by a 40-yard pass-and-catch from quarterback
Chris Mills to redshirt-freshman
Reece Horn.
After Fiechter's record breaking touchdown early in the second quarter, UIndy capped the first-half scoring with a 28-yard field goal from
Scott Miller with 2:26 left in the half. The Hounds overcame two holding penalties on the drive to extend the lead to 20 at the break.
UIndy fed the Cardinals more of the same in the second half. Jewell's failed onside kick attempt to start the third quarter gave the Hounds excellent field position at the Cardinal 42-yard line. One play later, Edmonds was in the end zone. The Waukegan, Ill., native got open on a post route, made one great cut to beat the safety and headed to the house.
In addition breaking the school's career receiving yards record Saturday, Edmonds upped his season total to 1,003 to become just the fifth-ever Greyhound to break the 1,000-yard mark.
Horn added two more touchdowns in the third quarter, good for his first two-score game as a collegian.
Will Brucker's one-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter finished off the Hounds' scoring.
Senior linebacker
Max Davis amassed a team-high 11 tackles. Seven of the Greyhounds' tackles went for a loss to match a season high.
The game's only turnover came in the final two minutes when UIndy recovered a Jewell fumble and immediately went into victory formation to run out the clock.
With playoff implications on the line, the Greyhounds will depart from conference play next week when they host Delta State Saturday, Nov. 3. DSU was a national semifinalist last season. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
