INDIANAPOLIS – With the best-of-three series knotted at 1-1, ninth-ranked Grand Valley State (44-7) downed the top-ranked University of Indianapolis, 3-2, in a thrilling conclusion to the NCAA Division II Midwest Super Regional Saturday. The Lakers broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth and stifled a potential Greyhound rally in the seventh to earn a trip to the NCAA Championship next week.
After dropping game one Friday, the Hounds (54-8) were hoping history would repeat itself; in 2009, the only other time UIndy reached the Super Regional, the Greyhounds dropped game one at Saginaw Valley State before winning two straight on the final day to earn its first "World Series" appearance.
Â
The Hounds staved off elimination with a
4-2 win in Saturday's first game, but could not finish off the talented Laker club, as GVSU's Briana Taylor delivered a two-out RBI single in the sixth to score her twin sister Brittany with what proved to be the winning run.
Â
Down to their last out in the seventh, the Hounds got back-to-back singles from
Taylor Russell and
Kelsey Rummel to bring up All-American
Casey Williamson, but the Indianapolis native lined out sharply to third, sealing to win for Grand Valley.
After besting the Lakers with a complete game performance in Saturday's opening contest, freshman
Morgan Foley again got the starting nod, but GVSU junior Miranda Cleary came through with a two-out single in the first inning to give the Lakers an early edge.
Â
UIndy hung a two-spot in the fourth to take its first lead of the game. Both runs came with two outs as senior
Bailey Wittenauer (double) and freshman
Jenny Thompson (single) picked up clutch RBIs.
Â
Midwest Region Player of the Year Katie Martin made sure the lead was short-lived, however, as the Laker senior lived up to her billing with a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth, good for the only home run of the series.
Â
A leadoff double went for not in the following half inning, as UIndy stranded
Jennifer DeMotte at second base to keep the score at 2-2 heading into the last half of the sixth.
Grand Valley started the frame with a groundout, a walk and a single, prompting UIndy head coach
Melissa Frost-Fisher to pull Foley in favor of DeMotte. Â The decorated senior, who had been playing centerfield, induced a comebacker to get the lead runner and bring up Taylor with two away.
Â
With the count full, the Laker shortstop fouled off two quality DeMotte pitches before sending one back up the middle for the game winner.
Â
GVSU freshman pitcher Sara Andrasik (19-3) got the win after allowing seven hits and two runs in her first career NCAA Tournament appearance.
Â
Rummel recorded two hits in her final collegiate contest and finished 11-for-23 (.478) in six tournament games.
Â
UIndy ends the season with a school-record 54 wins. The Hounds also set program marks for runs scored (401), doubles (97), RBIs (359) and total bases (822) this season, while also tying the single-season record for home runs (58).
