Box Score
HILLSDALE, Mich. – After jumping out to a 17-point lead at the half, the 22nd-ranked UIndy football team held off a late charge to earn the
17-14 win at Hillsdale Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds (3-1) more than doubled the Chargers' total offensive output (364-145) while compiling four sacks and an interception.
Â
Saturday's contest reignited an old Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference rivalry;Â UIndy and Hillsdale faced off in 22 consecutive years until their most recent meeting in 2009.
Â
The Greyhound defense surrendered just nine first downs and one offensive touchdown all game. Hillsdale's first-down total matches the lowest allowed by the Greyhounds since Findlay moved the chains just seven times in week five of the 2007 campaign.
Both Hillsdale's scores came off interceptions deep in UIndy territory by senior linebacker Steven Embry. The first came on a short three-play, 10-yard drive after Embry's pick in the third quarter.  Embry took it in himself with a 22-yard return in the fourth quarter for the game's final score.
Â
After setting the school record holder for most career completions last week, senior quarterback
Chris Mills set a new program mark for career passing yards Saturday. The Lafayette, Ind., native finished with 189 yards and a touchdown on 18-of-33 passing.
Â
Meanwhile, senior
Klay Fiechter tied a major school record when the veteran running back scored from one yard out in the second quarter. The rushing TD upped his career total to 30, matching Jim Ware's 51-year-old career mark.
Â
Fiechter, who also became just the fourth Greyhound to surpass 3,000 career rushing yards in the game, just missed his 11th career 100-yard performance by racking up 97 yards on 23 carries. He also added 58 return yards and six receiving for a total of 161 all-purpose yards.
Â
UIndy jumped out to a 17-point lead before the Chargers could even cross midfield.Â
Scott Miller's 37-yard field goal in the first quarter got the ball rolling. UIndy then scored touchdowns on back-to-back drives in the second, starting with Fiechter's TD and capped by a 33-yard scoring reception from
Reece Horn.
Â
On their ensuing drive, the Chargers entered Greyhound territory, only to have a sack by senior
Vince Maida push them back on the wrong side of the 50. On the next play, junior safety
Koby Orris came up with his second interception of the year to halt any leftover Hillsdale momentum.
Â
Both teams struggled to move the ball in the second half as the two opponents combined for just 166 total yards. Hillsdale benefitted from the two interceptions but mustered just 60 total yards in the final 30 minutes, including just six on the ground.
Â
Defensively, UIndy redshirt-freshman
Derrick Bryant led the Hounds with eight tackles, followed by senior
Todd Hacker with seven. Maida set a new personal best with 2.5 sacks for a total loss of 14 yards.Â
The Greyhounds begin defense of their 2012 GLVC title next week when they host conference-rival Missouri S&T Saturday, Oct. 5 in a 6 p.m. kick. The Miners finished with an impressive 10-1 record last season, with their only blemish coming in a 54-35 loss to the Hounds in week five.
