INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy football team (7-1, 5-0 GLVC) capped a successful 2014 Homecoming Week on campus with a decisive
52-14 win against visiting Lincoln University Saturday night. The Greyhounds have won their last four Homecoming contests and are 10-1 in their previous 11.
Â
Owner of a six-game winning streak, UIndy racked up more than 500 yards of total offense for the third consecutive game. Â The Hounds compiled 262 yards on the ground after handing the ball off 56 times, most since their 57 rushing attempts versus Hillsdale in the 2004 opener.
The win, combined with a loss by William Jewell, put the Hounds in sole posession of first place in the Great Lakes Valey Conference.
Senior
Matt Ripp had his third straight 100-yard game with a team-high 112 rushing yards. He had a three-yard rushing touchdown and a seven-yard TD catch. The trio of sophomore
Andrew Walker (74 yds, 1 TD), sophomore
Aaron Bruning (59 yds, 1 TD) and
Tuwan Payton (20 yds) accounted for the balance of the Hounds' rushing production.
Â
Meanwhile, junior quarterback
Connor Barthel had nearly as many incompletions as touchdown passes, finishing 23-for-28 passing for 255 yards and four TDs.
Â
The Greyhounds opened up a 31-0 lead after scoring on its first five possessions, while the Blue Tigers (2-6, 1-5) managed just 26 yards of total offense and only one first down over that span.
Â
The Hounds had first-half scoring drives of 69, 85, 6, 51 and 40 yards, with the shortest possession ending on a 23-yard
Scott Miller field goal set up by a
Koby Orris interception.
Â
Lincoln finally got on the board late in the half with its first sustained drive. The score itself came on a 27-yard half back pass from Bryson Winfrey to Vanzell Richardson.
Â
UIndy opened the second half right where it left off, driving 76 yards for another TD. Payton accounted for 50 yards on the drive – plus another 18 with his kickoff return –  but it was
Reece Horn's 15-yard catch that put the Hounds in the end zone.
Â
Walker and Bruning added rushing touchdowns late in the third and fourth quarter, respectively.
Â
The Greyhound defense was its usual stingy self, continuing its perfect streak of surrendering 20 points or less this season. The Blue Tigers managed just 228 total yards, 77 of which came on Morris Henderson's fourth-quarter rush.
Â
Sophomore linebacker
Rob Dury amassed nine tackles to lead the team, while senior safety
John Strickland added three tackles, one tackle for a loss and a pass break-up.
Â
The Greyhounds have a short week ahead of them as they host in-state Saint Joseph's Thursday, Oct. 30 at 8 p.m. The contest will air on CBS Sports Network as the Division II Football Game of the Week.
Notes: Ripp surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards early in the third quarter … Orris' INT was his second of the season and eighth of his career ... Senior WR Greg Johnson scored his first TD of the season with a 13-yard catch on the first play of the second quarter ... UIndy is now a perfect 20-0 in GLVC play since the league began sponsoring the sport in 2012.Â
