INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis, Saint Joseph's College and the Great Lakes Valley Conference are pleased to announce this fall's Greyhounds/Pumas football game will be carried by CBS Sports Network. The contest, which will air Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014 at 8 p.m. ET, is part of the NCAA Division II Football National Television Package, and will available in 100 million homes nationwide.
Â
Originally scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 1, the contest was moved to accommodate a national prime-time viewing audience. In addition to CBS Sports Network, the game will be offered to regional carriers and streamed lived on NCAA.com.
Â
UIndy head coach
Bob Bartolomeo, entering his fifth season as the Greyhound head man, realizes the significance of the announcement.
Â
"First off, it's a great job by our Athletic Director, Dr. Sue Willey, in helping get this game," said Bartolomeo, "and for that we're appreciative. We're also very appreciative of CBS giving us this opportunity. Any time you can get exposure on national TV, it's good for the program; it's good for the school; it's good for our league. It shows what kind of football we're playing in the GLVC.
Â
"It's a great opportunity for the TV audience to see our football program and what we're all about here at UIndy."
Â
In its 39th year this fall, the UIndy versus Saint Joseph's rivalry features the only two NCAA Division II football teams in the state. Last season's meeting was a nail biter in Rensselaer, with the Hounds pulling out a 27-24 road win on Nov. 2, 2013.Â
Â
The Pumas tied it at 17-17 early in the fourth quarter, but UIndy responded with 10 unanswered points to build a cushion. A quick touchdown by SJC pulled the home team within three, but the Hounds controlled the ball for the final six minutes to bleed the clock and seal the three-point win.
Â
"They couldn't have picked a better game for us," said Bartolomeo of the choice of the Saint Jospeh's game. "It's a big rivalry game. Last year it had implications in terms of who was going to be the champion of the league, and I'm hopefully it'll be that way again this year.Â
Â
"Saint Joseph's is a good football program. Coach (Cory) Sanders has done a great job. It was a heck of a football game last year up there. It came down to the fourth quarter, and I'm sure it will this year also.
Â
"We expect the fans and the TV audience to get their money's worth this year as well."
Â
Separated by approximately 100 miles, Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's inaugural football match-up came in 1971, with the Pumas defeating UIndy, then called Indiana Central College, in a 24-7 final.
Â
The in-state rivals have hooked up nearly every year since, with the Greyhounds owning a 27-10-1 advantage in the overall series, including wins in each of the last 14 meetings.
Â
UIndy is the two-time defending GLVC champion, compiling a perfect 15-0 record in conference play since the league began sponsoring football in 2012. The Greyhounds have also earned a berth in the NCAA D-II playoffs each of the last two seasons, advancing to the round of 16 in '12.
