Softball drop 8-0 decision to Bellarmine

Box Score

EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The top-seeded UIndy softball team was relegated to the losers' bracket of the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament Friday evening.  The Greyhounds (40-10), who outlasted No. 8-seed Rockhurst, 1-0, earlier today, were shut out by division-rival and fourth-seeded Bellarmine this evening, 8-0.

After spinning 13 scoreless innings in a record-setting performance just hours earlier, the Greyhounds again looked to starting pitcher Morgan Foley to take the ball.  The All-American hurler was touched in the very first inning, however, when Bellarmine DP Erin Sireno hit a solo home run to center field.

The Knights (36-14) tacked on four more in the third, including two on a double by Stephanie Powers.  Back-to-back singles and an error followed, ending Foley's outing after 2 2/3 innings.  It marked the first loss for Foley (30-5) in 26 decisions.

Meanwhile, the Greyhound bats struggled against Bellarmine starter Shelby Miller (14-8), who limited D-II's ninth-ranked team to just two hits in five scoreless frames.  Casey Williamson and Cori Eckerle managed the only hits for the Hounds.

UIndy has a tough road ahead, needing to sweep through three straight elimination games tomorrow to advance to Sunday's final.  Play begins with a match-up agianst seventh-seeded Illinois Springfield Saturday at 12 p.m. ET.  The Prairie Stars (20-21) split a pair of games Friday, falling, 1-0, to Missouri-St. Louis before bouncing Lewis, 3-1, to stay in the hunt.
