Box Score EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The No. 9 UIndy softball team (41-10) survived its first elimination game at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Saturday, producing a
6-0 shutout versus Illinois Springfield. Greyhound pitchers
Morgan Foley and
Coryn Tirpak combined to no-hit the seventh-seeded Prairie Stars (27-25) and end their 2014 season.
Foley, who struck out an
NCAA-record 30 batters in an opening-round win against Rockhurst yesterday, spun six scoreless innings versus UIS to up her season record to 31-5. Tirpak came on to finish the job with a 1-2-3 seventh, completing the first no-hitter – combined or otherwise – for the Greyhounds this year.
Foley fanned five batters, with a second-inning walk resulting in the only Prairie Star base runner of the day.
After scoring just one run in 18 total innings yesterday, the UIndy bats generated a half dozen runs Saturday afternoon, including a four-run outburst in the seventh frame. The onslaught was led by junior
Casey Williamson. The all-conference first teamer finished with three hits, four RBIs and two runs scored.
Williamson cranked a two-run homer to left, driving in herself and
Katie Kelly to give the Hounds the lead in the third inning. Later, back-to-back doubles from Kelly and Williamson fueled the four-run seventh.
UIndy advances to play fifth-seeded William Jewell this afternoon at 4 p.m. ET. WJC (29-22) outlasted the tournament's third seed, Truman State, 8-7, earlier today. UIndy and Jewell did not face each other in the regular season.
